Question about doing it side to side - do you paint from one side to the other? Or from each side to the center?

I have tried both ways Kitty T.. and for me its easier to do one side to the middle and the other side to the middle.. it might be different for others.. but I find this easier for me

Thanks RubyRedLocks! Playing around, I've done silver and black and I taught a friend to do it and she did black and gold to match her dress. I also did pink and red. Not very vintage, but it was fun.[huh]

Kitty, When I did my side to side, I would go as far to the next side as I could, and then back over it form the opposite side. I also have large nail beds so there is a lot of nail to cover. But I had to do it this way to make sure I got the edges of my nails.

I start with a line down the center so I get something to aim for when I go side to side, it also helps with keeping the half moons uniform. It also takes off some of the nail polish that is on the brush so I don't have such a loaded brush.

Yes, good point about not having a loaded brush!! That makes a big difference.

When I do the moon edge, I go as far as possible and then i mostly have a tiny touch up on the side. I don't meet in the middle on the moon area so it is easier to keep it rounded. ON my thumbnail it can be hard, and on my right thumb, it is slightly angled rather than rounded for having to meet in the middle. But I am right handed, so my left thumb came out perfectly. LOL...need more practice in the ambidextrous nail painting!

Aah hah,so I can pick up the colors in a particular ensemble and play off of those. Brilliant!
Also,love the pink and red I'll definitely try that combination.

Okay. I am going to school to be a nail tech (Mitzy the Manicurist, hehe) and I am back to classes on Saturday. I have to do lots of mani over the next 6 weeks and I will play around with this some and take some pictures. I have Mrs Carrie Palmer, the practice hand, so don't freak out the first time you see her!!

I have started doing my own Gel nails... and WOW..I like

I do the natural overlay on my nails and it makes them very strong and the nail polish lasts! It has been two weeks.. and my nail polish has not chipped at all!

On my toes.. I bought the color gel in Red.. and did two coats and my nails look like they have had a pedi.. the gel has not chipped and it looks like the day I did my nails

I am happy

Its a line called IBD, and I have some OPI Axxium gels, they both work very well

How about base & top coats?

Anyone have a brand they love? I was using Sally Hansen's base and top coat (all in one) but it's terrible! :rage: It goes on smooth and then as it dries all sorts of bubbles start appearing. I was told this is because I'm not putting it on clean, dry, bare nails but if they were any cleaner I'd have no nails! (Plus, if it's supposed to be a top coat, doesn't that imply that my nails shouldn't be bare?) There aren't any bubbles on the brush or in the bottle, so I don't know what the issue is. Any recommendations?

I like using Nailtiques nail protein as a top coat. Keeps my polish looking nice for quite awhile, dries pretty fast and also makes my nails nice and strong!

You really like that brand, don't you Kitty? I think you've recommended it to me for something else as well. I guess now I'll have to put it on my list for my next "shopping" trip.

Yeah, in the thread I started about growing your nails out strong. I've been using it a couple of months now and it's worked wonders on my previously flimsy nails.

Also, to help avoid bubbles, be sure to not shake your polishes. Just roll them between your hands.

I used Orly-French Manicure-Sheer Beauty as a base coat. I wasn't heavy handed with it either, I wanted to see my tips and moons through it.

And then I used OPI-Girls Just Want To Play as the color.

And when I want it to look more "natural" I use Sally Hansen-Salon Lacquer-Pink Twice (410) as the color.

I normally don't leave tips..I usually cut them off, but I figured I'd give it a go since I hadn't yet cut them. I kind of like it!

I have no moons!

I was just looking at the above picture and looked at my own nails--I have no moons! Is that weird?

Nope, it's not weird. I only have tiny slivers of moons on my thumbs. I just fake it when I paint them with "moons."

Have any of you ladies tried those nail art pens for drawing up your moon, and the filling in with polish?

I haven't tried it, but I find the brush on regular nail polish too large to make the moons perfect, and it's too fussy. I also thought about buying a very fine art brush and dipping it into the nail polish in stead of using the regular brush. It would make it much easier to shape the moons, don't you think?
