Straw Hat Day - May 15th (maybe?)

A friend here at the office noticed the straw boater I'm wearing today, and told me he thought Straw Hat day fell some time soon. I Googled it and found a veritable PLETHORA of interesting hat articles, herewith attached. It seems the consensus is that it's traditionally on or about May 15th.

Living in Tennessee, I normally switch from felt to straw about the 1st of April, but this year was able to wear felt through a couple weeks ago. I only have four straw hats, absent the cowboy ones (My wife's from Texas), so I always look forward to colder weather. My hat today is a natural shantung fedora from Bailey which I just had cleaned and a new band done by Drew at Clean a Hat. He did a great job.

I follow the May 15th rule...generally.
Here in Chicago the weather is not always cooperative.
Wore one on Mothers Day cause the sun was out and it was warm for a change.

It's all about the weather, I suppose...

Here in unpredictable New-England, exactly two weeks ago, the temperature stood at 98°, and I had a 2.5 mile walk to look forward to to get to my usual Tuesday Irish session. White trousers: white shirt: and out came the panama; it just seemed WAY too early to take out the hard straw.

The week after that, it was 60 degrees and raining: out came the WWI campaign hat and the trench coat; today: gorgeous spring weather: khakis, tan shirt, and linen cloth cap.

Who knows what the weather will be like on May 15? But I'll feel better taking out the hard straw in the second half of the month....

May 15th is Straw Hat Day the beginning of the season when men may wear their straw boaters and Panamas rather than the fur felt fedoras, porkpies, homburgs, and bowlers that we wear the rest of the year. Straw hats may be worn until Felt Hat Day which is September 15th.

Well, there are eleventy hundred such threads....

Welcome to The Fedora Lounge, trummy! We're glad you're here.
We encourage searching for the information you plan to request or share first. It was pretty likely that a forum about hats that has been up and running for about five years would have heard about Straw Hat Day at some point. :)

I don't have a straw hat and I don't think I will get one this summer. I'll be wearing my felt hat all through the summer. Straw hat day just wouldn't work here, considering that I had to wear a trench coat today and was considering gloves. I suppose the less drastically changable weather of the US allows rules like that to work better than in the UK.

^^ Linerless hats maybe (if I feel the need to take the liner out of my hats). Lighter felts no, for financial reasons (why does hatwearing have to be such an expensive hobby :rage: ?).

Temperature-wise, bookend another couple of months (at least) onto that schedule for Florida. But rain-wise, it's a good idea to have a felt hat handy in case the afternoon clouds decide to change one's mind about wearing straw.
