Do you have any idea if it is a contemporary or pre-factory move Borso?

If it's the later I'd be interested.

Well I'll propably be buying it. So I'll get more pictures for you so you can tell me the age.

I'd say it's not contemporary though.. I'm not sure, but it didn't look like a new model. What does the lining look like in the new ones?

I was strolling through a local antique mall this afternoon and a little hat called to me from among the chipped china and repro mission pieces:

Alesandria.jpg

It was a Borsalino Alessandria from Shudde Bros. Immaculate condition, 6 7/8! With a Fort Worth cattleman's crease, but no stiffener at all in the hat. It was as floppy as my other Alessandrias. AND it was $19.00! :D AND it was 30% off!! :D
What crease there was popped out without difficulty:

And it responded to persuasion nicely:

And the noggin shot:

Ivory-colored, although it takes on a greenish tint in some lights.

Aren't those just the best ones. I love getting a box in the mail as much as the next person but it's a special treat to stumble on a quality old hat that fits when you aren't even expecting it. And to save big bucks to boot. Congrats!

I believe that purchase is what some of us habitual internetters would call "Epic Win!" :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

So, I picked up this hat from fellow lounger Sproily, a Borsalino Alessandria that's curiously actually made for the Finnish market, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about its age?

I guesstimated 60ies myself initially, mostly because of the liner, but when I got it in my hands I became a bit uncertain - The sweatband back is taped and not sewn, and the sweat itself is reeded rather than unreeded, and comes with a red-and-white oval paper size tag. I google'd the store name in the liner, and it seems that they've been in business ever since 1899, so that wasn't very useful in terms of getting a time cut-off point.

Here are the pics (and here are some more) :

Curiously, the hatband has big tack-stitches at the top going all around the entire hat - I wonder what purpose it serves and why it's there, as the hatband is stitched at the bottom with the nigh-invisible stitches like you'd normally expect.

This is an intentional feature, and correct me if I'm wrong fellas, but that would make it a lot older than the 60's. [huh]

I don't have a Borsalino with this feature but I do have a few 60s German made hats with this ribbon stitching.

Their website

Take a look at the updated Borsalino website.

http://www.borsalino.com/

The "men's collection" is interesting. Typically weird Italian site. It shows pics and number codes, but does not name styles. Some of the hats are pretty cool, some are godawful.
But the hat on the landing page is fascinating. It's in front of a box that says "Borsalino Vicuna."
A fedora made of Vicuna fur felt? Yikes. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Priced out of this world, no doubt.

quite simply insane

But then again, you'll never go broke appealing to people with too much money.
Seriously, can vicuna felt be markedly superior to, say, Optimo's beaver underbelly felt or, frankly, Art's pure beaver?
I doubt it much.
