Why were the 70s such a tacky decade?

To this cowboy the 70s were a good time.

    Filson Shelter Cloth Dilemma

Those definitely are worth taking a look at. I've seen the previous model, the weekender jacket, and it seemed well-made and tough enough. Didn't seem that much lighter weight than some of the shelter cloth jackets but softer.

    Goatskin vs horsehide

I've read from experienced leatherworkers that there are no real practical benefits of horsehide over steerhide, mainly in terms of strength and toughness. Horsehide, though, I believe is more water resistant, so I like it for holsters in that regard, but as far as boots and such, steerhide is...

    Filson Shelter Cloth Dilemma

I exchanged the waterfowl coat for the shelter packer for a few bucks more. Forget everything I just said. The waterfowl upland is a good coat, but the packer is just simply better for my uses.

    Filson Shelter Cloth Dilemma

I ended up grabbing the waterfowl upland coat because I was able to get it at a steal. At first I was a bit unconvinced with the seams in the arms and shoulders, but it does have extra lining inside in those areas (the "yoke"). I think it will hold up fine in foul weather, and if I'm hunting I'd...

When do Cuban cigars become legally available in the US?

Well I said I wasn't an expert, but when I was last in Nassau I had some Graycliffs that were amazing, at least I thought so.

When do Cuban cigars become legally available in the US?

I have had some and wasn't impressed. They were probably bad quality, and I'm no expert, but I would put the stuff from the DR or the Bahamas up against them. Still would like to try some more though.

the voices of famous actors? why no modern actors sound like them anymore?

As it has already been said, modern actors do have distinctive voices, we just can't as easily recognize it because we are in the same time period. Also, common accents in film change over time because people tend to mimic other people. For example, most female actors in 70s films have kind of...

    Filson Shelter Cloth Dilemma

I'm leaning toward the outfitter or packer based on what you said. I agree on the field jacket points, that is why I'll never get rid of mine. As far as hiking, I get hot with more than a thin sweater on even down into the low 20s.

    Filson Shelter Cloth Dilemma

I'm looking to replace my Carhartt, or at least a provide a suitable alternative, with one of Filson's shelter cloth offerings. I'm a huge fan of the tin cloth coats and jackets, but find that a lot of the time they are simply too much jacket for most activities other than hunting, camping, and...

Mallory's Everest jacket: gussets out there today?

I would agree with this statement as well. The main benefits of down and synthetic clothing is weight savings, which matter a whole lot when climbing. Warmth is another matter, though. Thick wool and fur is by far the superior material for warmth and breathability. Down can accomplish the same...

Mallory's Everest jacket: gussets out there today?

I have to agree. I believe in a blend of natural fibers and the modern stuff. The key thing you have to remember about high altitude clothing is the higher you get the less the breathing capabilities of boots, and outer garmets matter. Circulation slows down so much that preventing frostbite by...

Vintage Lifestyle VS Re-Enacting VS Cosplay

I would say that it is a bit disingenuous to say that differences between Cosplay, reenacting, and vintage enthusiasm outweigh the fundamental similarities between all three movements. All of these trends represent different forms of nostalgia for past ways of life, historical events and...

Vintage Lifestyle VS Re-Enacting VS Cosplay

Thanks John for introducing me to the fascinatingly scary world of Cosplay. I am disappointed that I am just now seeing this post.

    Car Coats.

You know, I never felt that way until I starting wearing vintage, well-made and snug-fitting leather. You just have the feeling that you have on armor or something.

Movies you wished you had never watched.

I would say that probably every movie that has been mentioned so far has at least one redeemable quality--whether its cinematography, writing, action sequences, period correctness, a little humor, some intriguing themes and story lines, decent acting by at least one character, etc.. There is...

Time Marches On: Except in the Field of Cosmetic Surgery

There seems to be some race of "plastic people," an evolutionary offshoot of the human species, that has developed in LA. They are slowly migrating to major cities in the United States. But seriously, I live in the Texas Hill Country, where the grisly old cowboy face, like nicely aged...
