Occasionally I get to make an appearance on this thread. I suppose it's all in the BIG plan to be blessed with a massive cranium, otherwise I could have too many vintage hats. Here is one such example that I NEVER thought I might find; a hat in my size from (guesstimating) c. 1930, in spectacular condition! Now I understand exactly what is meant by the expression "the felt molds like clay."

Opinions, please, on the age guess...

Presenting a custom-made "Old England Hatters" (of Nice and Monte Carlo, France) masterpiece!

Molds like clay...

This is a Punti size 7-1/2, or about a 7-7/8-8 in the USA. Woo-HA! There was, apparently, one BIG Frenchman back in the day...

Sweat management, cooling system technology... Next!

Hi, hatsRme. I saw this hat on sale and couldn't believe something that nice could actually exist in a 7 7/8 (my size). Unfortunately, with my wife temporarily out of work and the Christmas season coming up fast, I had to pass on it. Must be my karma. Anyway, congratulations, and it's good to see it go to somebody who'll appreciate it.

The cooling technique used here was interesting, if not effective. I have never seen a custom hat (not factory-made) with such a feature.

Or, of course, Brim UP!

Thank you RJR and TropicalBob! This one is definitely a star in my stable.

Didn't remember you had the same affliction, Bob, but I will now. We mellon-heads gotta stick together!

Next time I'm in West Branch, I'll be wearing this one, RJR. You should be able to find me. I have been there, a great little town with historical importance. I really enjoyed the visit!

What a great find, Charlie. European hats are hard to date - could certainly be pre-war or earlier, but could also be 1950. Old ways were slower to change in Europe than in the U.S. It would be great to have a good photo of the back bow. Regradless of age, it is a beautiful hat in the hand and on your head. Congratulations!

Charlie, Great find! Wears great too!

Lock & Co. and Mayser used a similar logo format.

I have some Euro hats going back to the late 1930s early 40s with the same type of ventilation system so it could be from that time period but as Alan said it could be a bit later.

Thank you kindly, Alan and Steve!

I suspected that broad time frame. As time permits I'll dig into available public records to hopefully find something about the Old England folks. And thanks for reminding me of the bow shot!

Now trying to work in a comment about another "shot across the bow" from my wife...

For several years now, I have really been searching for good Fedoras. Most often, I've been wearing a Resistol brand (the make preferred by Humphrey Bogart, I have two of them), and more recently, a Stetson. All three of these hats are vintage, circa late 30's or early 40's (e-bay wins). For my Birthday this year, my family pooled together and funded my newest Fedora.

I am now the proud owner of one of John Penman’s Howard Hughes H4 “Spruce Goose” Fedoras. (For those not familiar with John’s Fedoras, this one is an exact replica of the Fedora Howard Hughes wore when he flew the Spruce Goose).

This Fedora is completely hand made out of 100% Beaver Fur Felt. It is a Beautiful, exquisitely detailed and completely hand stitched, well made hat. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of this Fedora.

Welcome Brian and a very nice hat - I'm a fan of John's work too. We don't see enough of his hats here at the Lounge.

I remember seeing the photos posted of the day he delivered the Hughes hat to the Spruce goose museum. I had the chance to visit the Goose when it was still in Long Beach, but didn't get to run around inside the way John did :)

The pics are still up on John's Facebook page if anyone wants to take a look
