Dobbs Gay Prince - Grey

21F8A83F-1B4C-4AB5-BED6-9128436FBD24.jpeg

Dobbs Gay Prince
Ultra thin velvet/velour like grey felt
5 inch crown as shaped - 5 1/2 to 5 3/4 open
2 3/4 brim with saddle stitched edge
7/8 self felted band with saddle accents

This super cool hat was enabled by Jonathan @TheOldFashioned. I was actually keen to let it pass on as I have a tan Gay Prince that doesn’t get enough wear... however the seller sent an offer which opened the door to some haggling and hooked me in. I really like the grey color on this one. My Tan GP appears to be a 1940s hat based on its manufacturing tag. This one has no such tag a few cues point to this being a slightly later hat. There is a very crinkly oil skin like liner protector... not the silky one from the later 50s though. The Dobbs Gay prince logo has the gold embossed carriage which also points 50s. I’ll probably do a side by side on the soon... but a quick impression is the felt is very similar to the 40s if possible slightly thinner and softer... however it seemed less obedient in holding a pinch. That was rectified somewhat when I opened up the crown and removed the rather deep center dent it was preferring. With a more shallow dent the side dents held very nicely and gave the crown a much fuller look. The grey felt shifts slightly to green hues in the late afternoon light... showed some more neutral to blue tones in other light. The hat over all is in extremely nice Shape... the saddle stitching is fully in tact and it has its original Gay Prince signature feather in all its glory! Or close anyway ;) Only thing I found was a small hole in the liner tip. Will do up a side by side on my two GP soon.

You definitely made the right choice in buying that one, Joe.

I find that we sometimes regret the hats we buy, but we more often than not regret the ones we didn't because we put various paradoxes in the way.

I call this dilemma, Schrödinger's hat :)

Stratoliners have been following me lately, or maybe I’ve been following them? Either way, no problem here. Just brought these 2 home today. Well worth the long trip. They seem to be earlier 50s? If I’m wrong please correct me. The crest of the walnut one has stars in the crest. The grey does not. Super excited for these additions! Same block numbers!

Fox Hats - Custom Made Western

7F54F92D-C115-4C3E-ADC9-2F4E3AF719C1.jpeg

Fox Hats - St Paul, MN (likely Langenberg/Beaver Brands)
Bright Bone Felt
5 inch crown as shaped
3 7/8 brim front 3 3/4 sides with 1/8 grosgrain binding
1/4 two ply grosgrain ribbon

Woah Nelly! This is one big hat! Custom Made Western from Fox Hats in St Paul, Minnesota... probably made by Langenberg/Beaver Brands. A super sharp crease in this one. Not sure the age... my guess late 60s early 70s. It is a firm stiff full on Western. Real nice shape over all.. just a few tan spots under the brim.. other than that real clean. A bit out of my comfort zone in styling and size.. but one cool hat for sure.

Oh hell yeah! That’s a great hat, Joe! I’m glad you’re giving bigger westerns a try. I’m also glad you’re not competing with me. ;)

A very nice, big western, Joe. Looks like it would compliment a suit and tie, too.

I wasted some time trying to re-tie the threads of the Beaver Brand story.
I knew I had another one hidden somewhere, but I can't find it.
Blue 5.jpg

So here is one of my regrets, the size is marked as 59 centimeters ( 7 3/8 US), it must fits perfectly to my head, instead it is wide and not very wearable.
Blue interno.jpg
It arrived new after the liquidation of Beaver Brand/Langeberg last production
Blue 4.jpg

I like the blue color and its shape, a little less the felt which is like in its brown brother, a little too much shellac on it.
Blue 2.jpg
Too bad because I am still in doubt what to do with it, evrytime I got it in my hands I try to wear it and most of the time it does not work
Blue 1.jpg

Called "Classic" as the brown one it is here waiting for the sleepy summer:rolleyes:
