Gus Miller Custom

I was in Cincinnati about 3 weeks ago. Stopped by Batsakes and had a nice talk with Gus Miller. Decided on a custom, 5 1/2 inch crown and 2 1/2 brim which arrived today.

Looks very nice! He did a wonderful job for you. Gus made me one a while back. He does very nice work but I found you have to be very clear with him what you want though.

My last new hat purchase for the immediate future isn’t very spectacular or expensive, but it is practical. It arrived on Tuesday just before I left for the judge-elect’s party, so I snapped a quick poor quality photo.

Great looking hat, but what intrigues me the most is the sweatband. Does that leather wrap around the reed instead of having a tape and reed sewn to the leather? Or is the tape almost the same color and texture as the leather so that it blends together? I can't tell for sure.

Finally got a photo of me wearing the Akubra Snowy River at Beltring in July this year. I steamed it a little to drop the sides down somewhat. Not much, but enough to stop it looking too "Country and western". I love this hat :)

Indeed. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's possibly 30's, 40's at the latest. And in decent shape!

It needs a cleaning, of course. I find the ribbon interesting because it is really, really thin... almost string-like. Not flat like the later produced ones I have. But no moth bites, no rips or holes, the liner is in great shape. The band is soft and supple but the gold stamping of the company from which it was bought is worn (but still readable). It is for sure a silverbelly color, too.

It was very crumpled and misshapen when I got it. I reshaped it with some water when I got it home.

I am thrilled with the find.
