The Tie Clasps... With chains...

I've always been puzzled on how those tie clasps/bars with chains are supposed to be worn; just clip/slide it over the tie and let the chain dangle, or am I missing something? I see tie chains being worn in period photos, but I'm not sure what a vintage tie chain looks like. I have a few that I've bought in flea markets (they know me and sell jewelry to me in lots), but I'm not really a fan of them. Pictures would be very helpful, maybe this could become a thread?

If the bar is plain and undecorated (or a simple loop of wire), the bar clips over the shirt and narrow end of the tie and holds the wide end. If the bar is decorated with some kind of engraving or looks like a tie bar that just happens to have a chain, then it's up to you whether you use it like a standard tie bar or use it as a chain. dh66's is one of the latter types.
