I believe there are at least two nice thin ribbons in 1967 (or 1966?) "The Professionals", starring Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, and Claudia Cardinale. But not worn by Marvin, but his employer, a rich landlord, and his assistant. Haven't got time to post it though - maybe anyone can help? They look more like Open Roads I think. Marvin here wears a campaign hat, BTW.

Ace in the Hole = Lots of thin ribbons...

A movie called "Ace in the Hole" is showing on The Hat Channel (AKA: TCM). It stars Kirk Douglas. It was made in 1951.

Lots of thin ribbons!!!

I know I'm the newb here but I've noticed over the years that Hollywood does things on purpose. For example the thin ribbon hexagonal bash that Mr. Stewart wore in The FBI Story. Did you notice the rest of his clothing? It was rather bashed as well. The same goes for quite a few other thin ribbon guys in the movies. For the most part these characters are the underdog/ the country guy/ the bumpkin/ the common every day man or the good guy. Now the opposite rings true for the guys with wide ribbons in the movies. They are the sophisticates/ the mobsters/ big industry/ etc....So Mr. Stewart's character with his beat up hat and clothes pulls a response from the audience because they relate to him.

Check out the very casual bash on that hat. Off center like he knocked it in there before putting it on.

The rest of the hat is immaculate...It looks as if someone karate chopped it with their right hand and that was it. Very fitting for the character........

Too cool...

It's interesting to see the variety of thin ribbons represented. This movie really uses the thin ribbons to underscore the idea that thin ribbons were worn by the "common man".

Mr. Cohen (owner of Hirsch's) told me the thin ribbons were "farmers' hats", so costume designers might have used them to depict farmers or common folks.

Can you post a capture of the out of town reporters? I noticed that they all wore classic fedoras with wide ribbons.

Hey RBH- I watched "Touch of Evil" tonight and I couldn't wait to comment on Orson Welles' "thin ribbon" hat. But I see that you have already posted pics from the film. Drats!
