What to wear to an Alumni Banquet

I have to go to an Alumni Banquet soon and I would really like to wear my Fedora. The hat I have is a PB Custom Indy so its a lovely brown color. I dont plan on wearing a suit or even a tie, its just not me, but I'm thinking of doing a sports jacket. What I'm asking is the color choices I should go with. I'm not to experienced with this sort of thing so I could use some help.

Well, to my thinking it depends on what college/university you graduated from. I would certainly be dressed up more if I graduated from an Ivy League school...

In no bad manor, my university is definitely not ivy league. Also, I am a graduate student if that means anything.

I would chose a nice tweed sportcoat, a long sleeve polo, nice trousers with brown leather belt/loafer type shoe and a nice pocket square to add some zip.
