I had been watching the series, Yellowstone, and really liked the hat on Rip, Kevin Costner's top ranchhand and yes, I liked the ones on Costner. So I took a 75 minute drive from my home up to Buckaroo Hatters in Covington, Tennessee, just north of Memphis. Mike Moore owns the place and has a top guy in Rocky. Love to just chat with them, but it seems I am always buying a hat. Today was no different. Tried on a few western hats and loved the various hatbands. We did find one that fit my face well. and I may end up with it, but Mike has some hats he has done up in a distressed sort of way. I posted two pics, one of which you can sort of see the distressing on it. Next time I am up there I may have him distress it some more.
If you ever get a chance to go to an actual hatmaker, do it. Just the level of customization, from fit to finish, I imagine that is what going to a tailor and having a custom suit would be like. You can pick the details and he has a lot of things already made up, from western to fedora, straw to beaver. This is my first 100% beaver hat, usually I have gotten it in hare to keep the price more affordable.
This is going to be my guitar-playing hat, as I have taken up, just two weeks ago, learning to play an electric guitar at age 58.

Fantastic Stetson, Max! I remember when you first asked about vintage felts, I said an old clear beaver might match up to your Optimo. How do you find it now that you have two such exemplary hats in your collection?

The crown of this one feels... I don't know how to say it, except to say it is clearly superior to my Optimo Silverbelly. Nice, thick, supple, "fresh", or "cool", to the touch, somehow, luxurious.
The brim, because of its width, has stiffeners. It feels like my "El Presidente", like cardboard, almost, except that if you rub the 7X with index and thumb it feels velvety, softer, "pettable".
I bought this hat because Bowen recommended it, and he was right. Now I need the Knox and Dobbs forty, which he says are the epitome of "molds like clay", and I will be complete in respect to the feeling I want to experience with my own hands in felts.

The colors are what nails it. I think the patina on the grosgrain probably makes it look even nicer than when it was new.

You never know what it will do over time. On my 1989 Rand the ribbon hasn't changed all that much but the binding has.
