How many new jackets do you have coming (and how many potential ones)?

I have been thinking about getting a nice racing shirt for some time. Not one that looks new and shiny but something with character. I really like the distressing on this Thedi so therefore Thedi was a strong contender. I'm not a huge fan of the two-slider zip and the ventilated side panels but those could easily be changed. However, I really prefer a racing shirt without side panels at all.

I love the look of this 60s Schott cafe racer so I asked Greg whether he could do a remake of it using the Route 66 as a base. I think Field Leathers' grainy Shinki will add just the right amount of character. He was happy to accept the project so I just ordered yet another Field Leathers

Great choice, Marc! I think both do look good, both Greg's grainy Shinki based on your VTG Schott and Thedi's distressed cowhide (I like the look of the ventilated side panels but also the more plain back panel of your VTG Schott). What's the current waiting time? I bet 9 or 10 months already or still 8 months?

The vintage Schotts are great jackets! I would consider removing the shoulder gussets for a cleaner look if you don’t need them. The length could also loose an inch or so, but a good jacket to base a remake.

I’m hoping this one will be the cross zip equivalent of my Brooks. Sears Oakbrooks on the way from Barcelona. Not even Fjorde could keep me from wanting this one. Measurements show a that it’s going to be a pretty tight fit, but I think it’ll work.

They don’t get enough love. You can usually find them for 150-250 with only the nicest of the nice conditions above that. Yet they are a classic cross zip d pocket design, well put together, and with decent enough leather for the price that is. So in that range I wasn’t disappointed in my purchase in the least. I did end up selling it but that’s because of the much discussed TFL effect. You know had to sell it to fund the next jacket which will be sold for the next one. So I’m wishing you all the luck that this hits the same sweet spot as your Brooks.

Deer comes at a pretty hefty up charge. And I really liked the goat as well. They’re pretty similar. Deer has wilder grain and is a little lighter colour compared to the goat. And I’m a big fan of goat in general.

Thedis goat looks amazing. Great choice and I'm sure it will be an amazing combo.

This one, oh boy, we'll see how it is. Never seen it before in the Schott line up. Reminds a lot of the Ridley except no belt loops and interestingly enough has side/back laces. Never had a D pocket before but was looking for something really clean like the Ridley that didn't have epaulettes or permanent belt. Most of the models from various makers have the belt and/or epaulettes. Hoping it's not usual Schott barrel sizing. It's in the PER line which I think is based more on vintage styles, so hoping it's cut a little tighter.

Apparel Annex. Great thick and heavy leather on these. Distinct designs on all their MC jackets. I sold one a while back but the price on this was too good to pass up ($63). And I like the color.

Why FL over Thedi? How do these two manufacturers compare?

In terms of style they're totally different of course. Thedi's style is unique. If I had to describe it I'd say a Thedi is a bit more fashion oriented whereas FL has more classic designs.

Build quality of both is extremely high. Both have flawless, laser sharp stitching. Thedi however uses some more advanced techniques. Edges are skived for instance plus they do French seams on a couple of their designs. A FL is basically built like an Aero but with higher stitch count. I do know Greg is working on improving his techniques. He recently bought a skiving machine which will allow him to make even neater seams. Left is FL, right is Thedi.

Thedi jackets have much more small details everywhere you look. Pockets, cuffs and collars are lined with corduroy, there's a small pen pocket inside, they stamp your name and the construction date on a piece of leather that they attach onto the inside of the pocket. Those kind of details.

In terms of leather choices and finishes, Thedi definitely has the upper hand. They have a lot of different hides, colors and finishes to choose from. And if they don't have it, Theodoros might source it. At FL your choices are very limited.

Why did I chose FL for this project?

1) Design.

-Thedi cafe racers have side panels which I don't really like.
-With FL you can add your own design elements: pocket placement, gussets, cuff style, zipper placement, extra panels, etc. For this project I thought it would be nice copy the design elements of a 60s Schott cafe racer.

2) Project experiences

-Working with Greg is an experience on its own. You don't just order a FL and wait for it to be delivered. Instead you extensively discuss design choices with Greg. You get a mock-up jacket which allows you to tweak the fit to perfection. Even during the build Greg sent me photos to confirm whether I wanted some detail this or that way.

3) Price

-A Thedi is roughly €400 more expensive than a FL (that is if you choose Shinki)

Biggest con right now is waiting time. I think there a 10 month waiting list if you order a FL today.

I don't agree Thedi is more fashion oriented, at least not in the particular case of the racing shirt you posted. That one is a clear cut example of functional design: the double zip and perforated side panels make it an ideal summer jacket for riding a bike. Incidentally, it looks stunningly beautiful, which makes it appropriate to wear off the bike as well.
