    Pipe Smokers Unite!

As you can tell from my avatar photo, I, too, am a pipe smoker. I've been smoking a pipe since 1966, when my parents gave me a Dr Grabow Duke and two ounce tin of Sir Walter Raleigh for Christmas (how the times have changed).

Have you ever had a stranger photograph you...when you were dressed vintage?

I was coming out of a local restaurant a month or so ago when a woman stopped me and asked if she could take a photo. I wasn't dressed particularly vintage, other than my Panama hat and suspenders. Turns out she's a local painter, and she had been driving around looking for subjects for a show...

Writing About Places You've Never Been To

A few years ago, my wife had three articles published about golf courses in Las Vegas, NV. She's only been to Vegas once and doesn't play golf at all. So, you don't necessarily have to have been to a place to write about it. You don't even have to be an expert in the subject you're writing...

Fountain Pen Inks - Adjusting & Custom Colors

I've been known to re-fill cartridges with an eye dropper. It can get a little messy, but if you have old cartridge pens, like Wearever, and can't get cartridges for them, it's worth the time and trouble. I don't mix inks, per se, but sometimes I'll combine almost empty bottles just to see...

    What's your alltime favorite movie?

The Quiet Man, John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McGlothlin, Barry Fitzgerald, and other Ford Stock Company regulars, directed by John Ford. Any John Ford movie is one I'll watch every time I have a chance.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I worked in a Sinclair station in high school. Was supposed to be a "pump attendant," but ended up doing a little of anything which needed to be done, including minor repairs. My favorite part of the job was riding with the wrecker driver when we went on calls.

    Dad's many hats

Thanks for the info. As I was reading your post, it occurred to me that I had seen that information about Airplane before, probably on TCM, one of my favorite movie channels.

    Dad's many hats

I could probably look this up on IMDB, but I'm sure someone here knows the answer. What was the movie which starred Sterling Hayden and Dana Andrews? Andrews played a former flyer who had to land a passenger plane after the pilots got sick, and Hayden was the senior pilot who talked him down...

    Dad's many hats

This is probably my favorite Sterling Hayden role, simply because he wasn't known for comedic acting. He played it straight which made it even funnier.

    Handwriting Improvement.

I'm partial to fine-point stub nibs, too. They seem to add a touch of elegance to plain, everyday writing. The finest nib I have is on a Pelikan 200 I bought in West Germany about 25 years ago. It's .2mm. I haven't seen one that fine in years. Keep practicing. Your penmanship will improve...
