I like the idea of having a drink with someone who can remain eloquent and witty even when they are a bit blotto.

Hmm.. well, if the 20s count I'd fit right into any party with the "bright young people".
For the 30s,Colin Clive, anytime, anywhere..and any drink!
I don't drink often, but I like to drink real good when I do:eusa_booh ..and I still have perfect make-up when I wake up:eusa_clap

My wife's grandmother's current husband used to booze it up with Hemingway when he was in Cuba (he was a sailor). Apparently they were fairly wild occasions. Olaf is over 80 now and is still a complete pirate, nobody really sees much of him as he is always at sea in his boat. He's very hardcase.

For me I couldn't limit it to one, so I'd throw a bit of a do with Errol Flynn, Churchill, the Bentley Boys, the complete squadrons of 64 and 601 from the Battle of Britain, and The Invincibles (the 1924 All Blacks touring team), and special guest appearances by Jane Russell and Rita Hayworth. Should be one hell of a shindig.

While maybe not as Golden Era as implied in this topic, I wouldn't mind dinner and drinks with Martin Scorsese. The guy has an encyclopedic-like mind for cinema history. I always enjoy his interviews and feel drawn in to the discussion. The man is a storyteller in the truest sense of the word.

Hard to beat Coward and Papa. It would be difficult for me to pass on a drink with any writer from that generation. Though I'd rather read Dos Passos or Fitzgerald, I'd rather share a drink with Hemingway.

Robert Mitchum would be on my list, too, as long as it was just a drink, and none of that jazzy marijuana.

Thought you might like this. Here is what Winnie asked for breakfast on a BOAC flight in '54:

"1st Tray. Poached egg, Toast, Jam, Butter, Coffee and milk, Jug of cold milk, Cold Chicken or Meat.

"2nd Tray. Grapefruit, Sugar Bowl, Glass orange squash (ice), Whisky soda." He then adds: "Wash hands, cigar."

The old boy even washed breakfast down with a scotch!

He was on my list for drinking companions as well.

If we are allowed to include fictional people, Reginald Jeeves would be at the top of the list, if only to learn the secret of his post debauchery eye opener. Of course it would be at the Junior Ganymede Club. Might get a glimpse of the "book".

I was not aware that Jeeves partook in such Bacchanalia.

Au contraire(sp?) my friend, per the New York period when he acted as a surrogate for the poet Rocky Todd, he proved quite adept at bacchanalia. He showed himself to be quite the bon vivant and Boulevardier.
