The pin isn't a Strat, but is very well-established as the pin that came with the hat. Yes, that's bizarre.

Hey, where do you think this pin came from? I saw a recent ebay auction that was selling the DC3 pin, but also had a photo of this pin in the auction asking collectors where they thought it came from.

The ebay auction said that the pin is odd and it is very similar in construction and design as the actual Strato pin. I mean, it is obvious it wasn't in the Strato adverts, but do you think it is possible that this fatter plane with the 4 engines was an early pin that they decided to discontinue? Otherwise, where would it have come from? Maybe Stetson used these for a very short time early in the hat's history? That would account for why they are far and few between and might account for the confusion by collectors on the whole question of what pin came on the hat?

Just curious if this sounds like a plausible conjecture?

I know nothing about pins, metals, or airplanes. Having said that, the Strat pin and the DC3 pin are about the same size and seem to be made of the same stuff. As far as I can tell, these companies put out all sorts of pins of any new design they added to their fleet, and there are hundreds of airplane pins on ebay at any given time.

I believe JtL had a theory on these that he wrote in the Strat thread, but I really don't recall. In any case, it has certainly resulted in a bit of odd cross-promotional history.

Prices do spike and dip a bit. In my view, the overall trend is still one of increasing value for the better stuff.

I'm not versed in motoring caps, but I've never seen anything like that. Everything about it appeals to me.
