Hello bn1966,

I am in Northern Vietnam at present teaching English. I am into watches and there are a lot of vintage watches here that were "left" here. The prices are reasonable for something like a period Bulova or Hamilton. There are some replica US military watches but trying to discern a real from a fake of those particular watches is not my area of expertise. Let me know what you are looking for exactly and I will have a look around.

The one you purchased looks more like a WWII watch.

During the Vietnam War, U.S. troops were known to buy Seiko 6105-8000/8009’s at the PXs (Post Exchanges) on bases in Southeast Asia. Many soldiers wore them through the rigors of combat, as Army-issued watches were known to fail in the jungle environment. Lots of pieces made their way back to the States on the wrists of service members after their tours were done. In Apocalypse Now, Captain Willard (played by Martin Sheen) wears a 6105-8110.
