That particular dealer is a republisher of old books and their books are available under their dealer name on Amazon, Ebay and other book selling locations. The average price of their spiral bound books is $15, and I find this a good deal. Note they only list one book for sale at a time on Amazon, but this is what they do professionally, so it's a clever selling technique. In other words, they have more than 1 book on their shelf available or ready for reprint. The shipping was fast and efficient.

My only complaint was that the publisher put the book in a standard cheap manila envelope and my book arrived bent. When I buy from them in the future, I will be sure to mention this and request cardboard inserts in the package.

As far as beauty books, I have a small but apparently, somewhat rare library of beauty books most of which I haven't catalogued on the Lounge yet. (My actual library is quite large). In fact, I am cataloging my entire book collection over at LibraryThing and just catalogued two rare beauty books this morning on a coffee break at work, one of which is selling for $150 and is NOT in reprint (gulp).

:eusa_doh: Out of curiosity, if I reprinted some of my antique beauty books, would you ladies be interested in buying them?

My intention was to post snippets to the appropriate thread (hair, nails, etc) as I had the time and NOT post to this thread but instead post to the popular threads where I have found there to be a lack of written material in some cases.

However, since we are posting, what information are you looking for that you feel is hard to find? As time permits, I can post scans from books from my library.

at the moment I only have the turudich vintage wedding and 940's, some modern books and a huge pile of 40's and 50's magazines I am consolidating into setting patterns and beauty articles (sketching and scanning)

I'm mainly into later stuff - 20's - 50's but i'm interested in looking at anything. PM me

Fabulous book for 30's '40's Fashion

Hello Ladies,

I hope I'm putting this post in the proper place...

I received this fabulous book as a birthday present and wanted to tell you about it, because it ranks among my all-time favorite gifts:

Adrian: Silver Screen to Custom Label by Christian Esquevin

For those who may be unfamiliar with his work, the book is about the designer who was at MGM from 1928-41 and had his own line after leaving MGM in the 40's. Lots of great photos, and detailed descriptions of the fabrications and colors he used.

Reading it, it's amazing to discover how many fashion ideas he invented that are simply taken taken for granted as the way to do things even today. (Most he was never credited for in the fashion world, which at the time considered Hollywood designers inconsequential and of a lower station.)

I won't go into many specifics, because although I was quite familiar with his work, it was great fun to discover new things about it and say "I didn't know Adrian invented that!" It also goes into the "why" 's behind many of his ideas...some of course due to actresses' shapes or preferences, but also to make inside jokes or subtle points about the storyline. (Such as the pin Norma Shearer wore in The Women in the scene where she finds out Steven is cheating on her: It's millitary style, to show her courage in the face of adversity.)

It's a great reference on vintage fashion, and I highly recommend it.

How To Have Model Beauty, Poise and Personality By John Robert Powers.

It's a modeling school textbook from 1961. Covers everything from dress sense, hairstyle, 'make-down', personality.

It's hard to find, but comes up on ebay & amazon every now & then. If you ever see a copy GET IT!

Those of you ladies who love to do vintage hairstyles this is a book you should definately get!!

I have this book and LOVE this book. I learned everything about wet sets, pin curls, rolls, etc and have tried so many different styles based on this book. I can't say enough how much value this book has given me - worth every scent.

Now let's encourage Lauren to do a make up book...hint hint hint

Yes, I have the above book. It is a nice book, but not a must have - imho.

It is geared towards clothing, make up and hair, but I wouldn't call it a 'how to book', it's more of an interesting read about post war fashions in Britain. Let me know if you need anymore specific information.

The Art and Craft of Hairdressing - A Standard and Complete Guide to the Technique of Modern Hairdressing, Manicure, Massage and Beauty Culture
Edited by Gilbert A.Foan - Secretary of the Hairdressers' Parliamentary Committee etc. etc.
Illustrated with 10 plates and nearly 400 illustrations in the text, 530 pages including the index.
Can't date it exactly, but it is from between the Wars. Not 'my' period of interest, but such a great book (and vintage 'of the era' fashion and beauty books are so hard to find) I had to buy it. If there is something you are really looking for I can look through the book and when I finally get my scanner (early March) I can send it to you.

Fun! I am going to buy these as occasionally I need to do vintage hair and makeup for magazine shoots and i'd like to break out of my "comfort zone" and do more intricate looks. Thanks for posting!
