Prince Charles' Style: Like or Dis-Like?

I find very little wrong with the way he dresses. Actually, reminds me of some of the old Apparel Arts and Esquire illustrations.

I don't see whats wrong with this, infact its a good thing- the navy/gray for everything is part of what makes suits seem boring and stiff/lifeless. In summer/hot weather, light colors and linen would certainly make more sense and shouldn't be frowned upon even for workwear (in an office, of course). That said i'd have wished he'd have pointed/wider lapels on that suit.

1. He wears a hat, and a gentleman should wear a hat. A hat wouldn't appear too attention seeking considering he is a Prince and could therefore get away with the formality of a proper hat.

2. His Highness' suits are nicely cut but could do with being other colours than plain grey. Grey is a nice colour but variation in pattern and colour would in no way compromise the appropriateness of his attire. Mr Thunder wears patterned suits as well as plain ones, but always looks elegant.

3. Plain ties are of course perfectly appropriate, but one who can wear a patterned tie and still look as smart as one in a plain tie has a lot of style.

When Prince Charles had brown hair, he used to wear navy blue much more than today. Grey hair goes well with grey suits. Still, the blues pop up from time to time:

.......I don't think you'll get many takers.....there are a couple of Italian guys whose names elude me as I'm having a senior moment, Clooney perhaps although he's in a slightly different part of the style chart.....Basically Charles dresses like an English aristocrat and there are one or two who dress in similar style but are getting a bit long in the tooth......The Duke of Beaufort and the Duke of Marlborough come to mind....both are probably in their late seventies/early eighties but 15 to 20 years ago these guys looked pretty good

.......This pic is pretty old I couldn't get the one of him today to attach....but
you get the idea.....he's still a very stylish guy who dresses exactly as Prince Charles does.......if anything the Duke of Beaufort of whom I can't find a pix was even more stylish because he was a smidgen more bohemian (probably because he's an art dealer)

Now that's the kind of suit Charles should be wearing. I don't like some of the other details such as the collar, sleeve length and the way the tie is tucked, but they're common enough Italian quirks, so I'll give them a pass.

But that fabric is great. Charles has access to literally any fabric he wants for suits, and he manages to choose some of the most boring ones on the planet. It's quite possible to be interesting and stylish while being quite appropriately dressed.

Honestly, Charles often strikes me as the kid who doesn't know how to step out of the bounds of the everyday and normal. Appropriate? Always. Well made and well fit? Of course. Elegant? Often. Interesting? Rarely.

Not being interesting is both good and bad I suppose.If you're interesting in the wrong way, it's a negative. But in fashion, if you're interesting in a good way, people notice and respect it. Charles is just neutral. It's the politician's creed of 'don't offend' in better tailored suits.

First (and this is speaking as a Brit), most people I know that don't despise Prince Charles would, at best, disapprove of those suits from the Sartorialist website on Charles.

Secondly, he could be interesting, but he's not supposed to be. He's supposed to be traditional, and not out of bounds of normality. I think he'd look silly in both the examples on the Sartorialist link - especially the ties (being too long, or tucked over half of the coat). He'd be criticised for it, and considering how much of his life consists of criticism, I understand that he wants to avoid it.

He's not a politician, he's not a fashion icon, he's a prince, and unfortunately, fashion is not really something Charles can play around with.

(Also: I think some of the photos of him in this thread look a thousand times better than Mr. Matteo Marzotto - including Charles in the cream double breasted suit, although I think it looks fantastic regardless of what it's compared against.)

I completely agree with Lokar. Furthermore, the last "fashion forward" Prince of Wales was an awful king. I'm sure that Prince Charles doesn't want to invite comparisons.

And even though Matteo Marzotto is the head of a fashion house, he still doesn't dress better than Prince Charles IMO.

.......Well no one was suggesting Prince Charles should wear exactly the same suits or look as Marzotto....we were asked for suggestions on living people who looked as good as Charles recognizing as I would have thought self evident that how people wear their clothes is very much a matter of personal style ......IMHO Marzotto looks outstanding and I've no doubt if he was wearing a silk Dupion lightweight the same as Charles he'd look just as good..... Describing Charles (and I'm one of his greatest fans style wise) as looking a thousand times better than Marzotto in his check db is just the tiniest bit hyperbolic don't you think
