Hi Forgotten Man,
Have you been able to find someone who can clean hats in the L.A. area? I've got a couple of vintage fedoras that could use a good cleaning but hate to send them off to Optimo if there's a reliable local service. Congrats on the great hats from the film warehouse and from...
I wouldn't call the felt of the Akubras that I have stiff at all. Sure, the Fed IV standard needed a little loosening up when I first got it, but once I'd settled on a bash, it was quite easy to work with. And the Campdraft is even better, in my opinion--it bashed smoothly with no stiffness...
My wife found this vintage Champ fedora in a thrift shop and hoped that it would fit me. Alas, it wasn't to be...it's a size too small for my noggin. I'm guessing late 1950s vintage, maybe early '60s. Since I can't wear it, I'm hoping one of you can.
5" open crown (it currently has a center...
My first two fedoras were these two Stetsons, both purchased from the Village Hat Shop's Long Beach, CA, location last October and November, and each for $148.00. They're good, high quality hats, but I'm wearing my Campdraft 90% of the time, lately--and a Miller Milan or my Fed IV the rest of...
Thanks, Daizawaguy--fantastic post. That indeed has been my concern--that I wouldn't be happy with the low-end weave. And the wine analogy is excellent--hadn't thought in those directions, but you are clearly right in my experience with wine. I'll just save up for the rainy day when I can go for...
Great post, CRH--you've echoed my dilemma. I've been thinking about shelling out $350 or more for a fine Monte from Art/Bob, but find myself hesitant to put that kind of money down on a straw hat...even if it is a work of art. Looking at the beautiful felts on Art's website, I'm having...
Beautiful hat, HB! I've been communicating with Art via PM about a Montecristi, but the more I review this thread, the more I want to hold off on the straw and go for one of his extraordinary felts. Such difficult decisions...Congrats on this one!

Fantastic, Mario! Thanks for posting this. Notice how comfortable Durante is in using his fedora to play with character, moving it all over his head. Darin mostly leaves his alone, unless he is following Durante. Very cool!

Thanks for the great pics, stats, and advice on the Squatter, everyone. I didn't realize that it had as much taper as is evident in the photos, and this might keep me from making the purchase. Then again, if the CD doesn't come out in Moonstone after all, I just may give the Squatter a try.

That Willow Green looks fantastic, CRH...and here I am trying to hold out for a Moonstone Campdraft! We'll see if I break...the hot so. Cal. weather might give me the fortitude to wait on felts for a couple of months...or not.

Alan, those are spectacular Montecristis! I've been on the edge of my first Art creation for a while now, and I think you've bumped me over that edge--I've just contacted him about a Montecristi. Could you share the stats on the center hat in the photo--crown height and brim width? While I tend...
Congrats on the Stetson, Blackthorn. It was one of my first fedoras, too--in mink, a dark brown--and I also followed it up with a Tawny Fawn Fed IV pretty quickly. I agree with everyone here; keep that brim flipped up in the back. Some like the upturn around the brim, from mid-brim back; as you...
Viper Man, that's a gorgeous hat...and you, among others, have convinced me to order an Art creation. I've been thinking of having him design a Whippet clone of some sort for me, and this looks very close to what I have in mind. Beautiful hat--congrats!
Steve
Sounds like good news on the Campdraft in Moonstone, OG--I think this is the first response from hats direct in which they say that Ron's actually considering it...let's hope he goes for it soon!
