For the past few years, I have been living mostly in Munich. Are there any members in Munich or nearby? I would love to connect and learn about any vintage-themed events in Munich or elsewhere. Thanks.
I saw part of an Italian film on Italian TV (maybe made for TV) that appeared to be made recently about a police squad fighting gangs. It was set about 1910-1920s. I remember that all of the police were wearing great period style suits with contrasting vests, high collars, great hats. The...
Thanks Fletch. Those were my thoughts. But, what about white tails? Cab Calloway wore them, and they were also worn in films. These appear to have only been worn by entertainers. Does anyone have any evidence of non-entertainers wearing them?
As for other colors, the only acceptable...
Does anyone know if there were alternatives to traditional white tie in tropical areas during the Golden Era? Were tails in any other colors, or combinations such as white tie, black pants and white mess jacket, ever worn? Or was the only option just light weight black tails?
Here is one available from the UK. I have the same one and it is very nice.

It looks very Euro to me, almost like it was made from tie fabric. I would wear it with a solid navy shirt and white pants or the reverse, or white pants and shirt with a solid navy tie.
In comparing shirts in many period pictures with todays shirts, there are many obvious differences, but some things that I cannot figure out. Assuming the height of the collar being the same, period shirts appear to have sat higher up the neck than modern shirts. Perhaps the patterns were cut...
I found this on the following site:
"In any event, the English like dark suits. In fact they like the darkest suits. Americans have no idea how dark the English like their suits because generally we will instinctively choose lighter colors. The English like a charcoal that is almost...
I read somewhere that the English have an aversion to black suits. However, they will wear grey that is virtually black. I have a 30's cutaway that is an almost black flannel with black piping.
I highly recommend "Men in Black" by John Harvey, a social/cultural history of black clothing on men. He says that in the late 19th and early 20th century, black personified formality, but also came to represent death. Interestingly, he traces the patriotic meanings of black in the early...
I do not know if anyone posted this link anywhere else. It makes the point of why one should where a suit in certain situations.

Perhaps we need to rethink the whole idea of what a professional is or what it means to be a professional. Perhaps being "cool", or at least looking that way, has replaced all other virtues or professional attributes.
And what is with the child-like pose on the left. Heidi Klum and a lot of models do it - pidgoen-toed, rounded shoulders. Is this supposed to be cute or sexy or something?
Do you feel any different when you wear a hat? For example, do you feel more completely dressed? Do you feel different from others - in a good way, bad way? Does anyone agree that how we feel about our clothes - our emotional connection - is a big part of why we wear what we wear?
The width of the pants is for me the most distinguishing difference between the 30s-40s and the last 20 years, particularly the bottoms. Although there was a lot of variation, by and large, older pants were cut to hang straight from the waist with a minimal amount of tappering to the bottom...
