The Kitten Finish referred to a patented process where they put the almost finished hat in a room with a kitten and let the kitten use it for scratching post. This only works with kittens younger than 16 weeks because they have much finer and sharper claws.

According to USPTO records, the term "Kitten Finish" was first used on 9/29/1943.
