My deepest sympathy and very best thoughts to all FL'ers - and everybody else - living in Queensland

I have an Aunt/Uncle in Brisbane - they're okay, but my aunts work went under water.
There are floods + fires in Victoria as well.

Now my brother and his family have to knuckle down for cyclone yasi... crazy weather indeed.

I have an Aunty and Uncle in Brisbane too. They are ok, my Uncle helped with some of the clean up near where he lives.

I heard about the cyclone... one bad thing after another :(

News about Yasi is not good at all, ABC24 had Bligh saying it has the potential to be more life-threatening and destructive than any cyclone in living memory.

I just hope something changes in the next 8 or 9 hours and she weakens.

Collingwood flood victims need assistance - Please Give Generously
Torrential rain hit Collingwood in the early hours of last night.
Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, flannies soaked, woollen
trackies sagging, muttering 'Faaackinell'.
Flood waters devastated the area causing approximately $30 worth of
damage.
Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were
woken well before their Centrelink cheques arrived.
The Collingwood Herald reported that hundreds of residents were confused
and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that
something interesting had happened in Smith St ..
One resident - Tracy Maree Sharon Britney Madonna Smith, a 15-year-old
mother of 5 said 'It was such a shock, my little daughter
Chardonnay-Mercedes came running in to my bedroom crying. My youngest
two Joachim and River slept through it all.'
Apparently, looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried
on as normal.
The Australian Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of
Bacardi-Breezers to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers
are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities
of personal belongings, including Health Care Cards, Jewellery from
Kmart and Bone China from Big W.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those
unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most
sought after - items most needed include: flannelette Shirts, tight blue
jeans or spandex, singlets (blue & white) white sport socks, Ugg boots
and any other items usually sold in Priceline or The Reject Shop.
Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.
Required foodstuffs urgently needed include: Microwave meals, Baked
Beans, Ice cream, Chips, Fizzy drinks.
Donations of $ 25.00 will be taken to buy a packet of Winny blue 25s
and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected.
GIVE GENEROUSLY !!!

The Beau Arts Ball - Perth, Western Australia

My friends are running this event and I am voluteering....it's going to be great because the focus in on authenticity. You won't even be allowed in if you are dressed in silly, cliched costumey shop attire. And because the burlesque/swing dance/jazz scene here are so huge, this would be worth coming from interstate for.

Coming to Perth this winter…

Ever wanted to be a Living Work of Art? If you’re in Perth, then this year you could get your chance.

The Beaux Arts Ball is inspired by the Artists Balls and stage shows of the 1920′s and 1930′s, where artists like Picasso and Erte created costumes that blurred the line between art, fashion and performance.

It’s a Ball in the broader sense of the word – no sit-down meal will be provided, this is more of an Arts event, with entertainment and dancing.

Style

The styling for the inaugural Beaux Arts Ball is that of an authentic Jazz Age costumed Artists Ball.

Our creative vision for this event is very specific, and we’ll be adding images, videos and links to communicate this vision. We will hold a public session before applications open so that people can ask questions about what’s appropriate.

What we don’t want
is costume-shop gangsters in Zoot suits and molls in hot-pink feather boas. If your idea of the 1920′s and 30′s is based on Singin’ in the Rain, then we’re going to take you back to the drawing board. Flappers wore skirts to their knees, and never, ever wore a sequined headband containing a feather. We’ll be suggesting more authentic films such as Cotton Club, House of Elliot, Brideshead Revisited – as well as original historical material.

Venue: The beautiful Perth Town Hall
Date: Saturday, 6th August 2011.

Ooooo - love this! I particularly like the idea of briefing people on what's appropiate wear for the era - it's not that difficult to pull together an authentic look so they don't have to resort to the cliched costume shop attire. For example, with the bandeaux, you don't need to resort to cheap sequins and chook feathers (although some bandeaux did have sequins on them, and certainly feathers were worn in some - ostrich, egret, etc). Even in the 20s, some women simply resorted to draping a diamante necklace around their head! Can't wait to see what you put together.

Bit of classic Kiwi comedy here you lot.

We grew up with Billy T. James but I reckon the Aussies here will get this and have a good chuckle about it:

That's great Smithy! Reminded me of some of the local characters where I grew up in Western Sydney, especially the bloke
who lived across the road from us. He had 8 kids and no steady job - he made his dough from racing greyhounds, doing odd
jobs like fixing cars and lawn mowers and pulling the odd stunt like the one in the video in order to get a cheap deal on stuff.
I look back on those days and laugh!
