Thanks guys. For several yrs this chocolate Rand & the black Rand were the "pride of the fleet" & got a lot of wear as I moved up from Stetson Ranchers, Gun Clubs & straws.

I really like the old 3-cord ribbons. Too bad a source can't be found to clone some hats with.
My Tatton Baird is 2 yrs old and came with a 3 cord ribbon. I really like it.

TAR Thursday (Friday for me, as I'm taking tomorrow). The color on this hat is superb. A rich hue and well-saturated. Just a great hat. Plus I dig this version of the logo.

1940s - I think - J.C. Penney's Marathon in blue.

I only wear it at sunny days, so it won't getting wet. I also think it's Toyo straw. I don't think it's Shantung.
If it says natural straw, then maybe it is... but Toyo and Shantung are both paper straws. No matter, this is a nice straw hat for sunny days. It gives you shade and looks good while doing it.

Shantung hats generally have a shellac-type coating that helps keep them resistant to water damage. Even Panama hats from Cuenca use it sometimes.

Glad to hear the good word about Beaver Brand. I have been curious about their quality. Seen nothing but good reviews on them here in the Lounge.

They run the gamut. I've seen Beaver Brand hats that looked and felt great, and some that had the feel of a doormat. I think they tried to hit many different price points, especially in the later years.

Gee, I forget. It's been at least a year. I'd have to go to the Marathon thread and see when I posted it!

This 10X Beaver Brand actually has a better feel to the finish than most of the Stetsons and Resistols of the same era that I've worked with. You can tell you're wearing a good hat when you pop it on your head. I wouldn't mind having a few more of these.

Then again, I can only speak to this 10X since it's the only example of a Beaver Brand that I have. With that said, I still wouldn't mind having a few more Beaver Brands.
