Where can I get a leather trenchcoat?

I'm thinking of something in dark brown leather, with texture and grain, but not too heavy, maybe goatskin. It must be styled 30s or 40s.

Where could I get that from do you think?

I've seen something at Lost Worlds, but it's a special order with no price quoted, so probably costs as much as a small car.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

loads of leather trenchcoats

Have a look on a very popular Dutch site, called "marktplaats" (market place). You will find lots of bargains in all categories and loads of (old) leather jackets.
Here some links regarding the subject leather trenchcoat:

Just copy/paste if the link doesn't show up..
These are all adds of people who are trying to sell some old stuff. Most of the jackets will go for $ 50,- - $ 100,-. These trenchcoats were very popular in the early 50's and 60's when lots of people owned a small moped called "Solex". All who owned such a Solex drove them in winter with a long brown leather trenchcoat...
Just email the seller and ask for questions and if they are willing to ship to the US. Consider that EU sizes are different from US. If I can be of help, just ask.

The irony is that today the coat would cost you more than the moped.

Is marktplaats.nl an auction site like eBay (plaats een bod looks like "place a bid" to me, and vanaf presumably a minimum bid), or just what we call "classified ads"?

Hi Fletch,
Yep it is an auction site, very well know over here.
And you are right: "Plaats een bod" is translated "place a bid" and "vanaf" is a minimum bid. The nice part of it is that you can always contact the seller and you do not have to place a minimum bid. Just a very simple ebay-like marketplace. If you need assistance in translation or need more information, just ask.

As are the UK sizes - XXL=48 and hats and shoes are one size off from the US numbers. German sizing is "easy" its just "add ten"... 42US=52 EU, but the wides and longs come either is A,C,D-sizing +cm chest or other weird numbering. Not getting into military sizes here. Problem is then be it shoes or clothes, you can get country-specific French, Italian or Spanish sizing not then again to do with the fashion thats whacked with everything. Ah, need to love the EU common market...

I had a coat almost identical to that back in the first half of the 70s. Used to wear it with 14-hole oxblood Doc Martens with my jeans legs cut short so that they couldn't be seen below the coat hem.

Thanks for the info and ideas. I did not know about those dutch motorcycle coats still being available. I'll investigate further. I'm also wondering about a WW2 US Navy transport coat.
