Unbelievably rude and crass behaviour! What is wrong with some people?

Rude and crass, yes, but also unbelievably stupid from a business point of view. Charge a premium and take it to the bank.
Not only do they not know how to treat a customer, who could become a return customer, they also don't seem to know how to make money.
I could see them closing their doors.

Art is having a hard time finding a buyer for VS. His hats are world known and artists, movie stars, and royalty regularly place orders. If our established hatters with a proven business plan and reliable income streams can’t keep going I wonder what the future holds?

Wow. That's not good. Maybe because there are too few young people interested, and those of us who would be feel we're 15 years past when we should have done it?
Buying it name and all would set a high mark to meet going forward. It doesn't seem like obtaining the financing would be a huge obstacle.

Nope, only 2 words I had were piss off. A bit out of character for me but that comment took me by surprise.
It would be a conversation stopper.
Maybe I would have prefaced your response with, "if the band's are all ...."
Or maybe not. When you're shocked and feel the blood quickly heating sometimes you're too busy contemplating the tip of their nose.

Absolutely. Any business minded person would have shown the customer their range of ribbons, come with suggestions, shown the customer how the ribbons look on their own hats, let the customer see, feel and try their hats, put the ribbon the customer chose on the customers hat and said, "hope to see you again sir, would you like to be on her mailing list."

Thus, a happy, satisfied customer willing to come again and maybe buy a hat or, at the least, recommend the hat store.

I've no doubt the new hat business is hard. Why make it harder by peeing off potential customers?

The Aspen Hatter shop in central Austin were just jerks. When I asked to buy a hatband in the shop the clerks exact words were "why would we want to make your hat look as good as ours? If you want the band you need to buy a hat too." Their hats start in the $700 range. I mumbled piss off and left.
I would have said something about cultivating business clients, which they just blew to Haiti. Then something about my ridiculous hat budget, size of collection, and how my friend and i will gladly spend our $$$$$- figure funds elsewhere.
