What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

French week, deuxième jour.
Arlesia lords hat in brown, restored by Penumbra. A woolfelt lords hat is not very common. The hand of the felt is not as nice as a furfelt, but they sure did some pretty cool stuff with wool back then.

Tim, Thanks! JHS was the largest Fur Felt Factory in Central Europe. This is from 1909 so about the same time as the photo.

"Today, the factories cover a floor area of 44,500 m2 (square meters), the factory and warehouse building alone 18,800 m2.

Two fur magazines store the raw material procured at home and abroad of hares, rabbits and nutrias.

Approximately 16,000 skins are processed every day, and the hairdressing shop, the machine shop, the mill, dyeing, dressing and bar dyeing companies make their way to the packing rooms to leave the factory as ready-made hair felts. Our own carpentry, turnery, locksmithery, foundry and printing works - each company to the extent of a small factory - get the necessary tools. All working rooms are light and airy and with the most proven heating. and ventilation equipment (Sturtevant system). In the walk and dye rooms, the hot air blown in through a wide-ramified pipe system prevents any formation of haze; in the other workshops, suction devices operate with such success that the dust developed in the factory is eliminated to barely noticeable traces.

The machine equipment of the factory corresponds to the current state of the art. The most modern innovations and improvements in the field of machines are in use here.

Twelve steam boilers and four steam engines provide the operational power of 1100 horsepower.

The actual factory operation uniformly procured a steam engine of 600 horsepower, of which 250 are transmitted by electric means of 25 electric motors.

Two steam engines of 250 horsepower each serve the electrical lighting and the ventilation systems. The fourth 250 horsepower steam engine is the reserve. Feeding the boiler requires three wagons of coal daily.

The factory currently employs 2000 workers and a corresponding number of civil servants and factory managers; It is designed for a daily production of 5000 hair felts. The company has always been concerned with caring for the well-being of its officials, plant workers and workers."

Great history there Steve. Sounds like they had a very impressive operation.

Yup. Ask away.

I was just curious as to how it has held up. I've read reviews that say the felt is thinner and feels like cardboard. I've also read the contrary. More importantly, I wanted to see a headshot. I'm pretty sure you've posted them before, but I have a terrible memory. My job requires me to be outside most of the time, so I was looking for something that provided some decent shade and looks good. I think it checks both of those boxes, and the grommets are a nice addition for airflow. I have a Lightning Ridge that I originally had intended to split time between being a work and leisure hat, but being at the top of the Akubra price range, I am looking for something a bit cheaper in price to use that will still be able to take the same abuse. Thanks Johnny.

Enjoy your day everyone. Use your yards if you have them.

Very nice. I'm really liking that model. Correct me if I'm wrong though, it looks as if the sweatband is showing itself through the felt in the front of the hat.

#22 for tomorrow since I may be too busy to post.
Got this one in today. shaped it up and cleaned it just a bit. First, out of many, OR styled hats that I’ve ever gotten that didn’t need any kind of work and/or moth damage repair.
It’s also my first 3x BQ Fifteen. I’d guess mid to late 50s.
Nice natural felt on this one.
Won’t sell this’n. :)

I think you were right giving it another go, Terry. For me the 2 1/2 inch brim is the perfect size.

The ribbon colour works well with the hat, Jim.
Thank you steur! I'm glad I did too. The vintage felt was so nice on this Dobbs and the crown profile was equally nice after I changed out the block profile. I just had to give it another shot, even if it does have a 2 1/2 inch wide brim.
