Any owners of Aeros midweight horse?

Hi.

I almost ordered a midweight Aero but changed it the last minute.
My main concern was that I wanted zipper chestpockets and if you look at my avatar thats a stiff steerhide (but still thinner then normal heavy steerhide its about 3oz)
and you can clearly see the pocket panels coming through.

I would suspect a midweight horse being very much softer would show this alot worse.
I changed the order after getting the samples.

What do you say?

Reason I ask is that I would still want a black jacket sometime and the midweight fits what I'm after
so I haven' t given up on the thought, just postponed it a little.
If this is a problem I guess one could order a jacket without the chest-pockets and with map-pockets instead of gun-pockets,
but still, I would love to hear its not a problem if anyone has experience?

I also wonder if there is other hides. IS there a normal brown hide used for A2's for example, or are they only russet and seal-colored?

My handwarmer pockets come through the front of my FQHH 1930's Halfbelt.

I have not seen many medium HH jackets from Aero. I would be interested to see some. I know that most vintage jackets that are from the 1970's and earlier are medium weight and no where close to the FQHH jackets from Aero in terms of thickness.

I would ideally like to own a medium weight HH from Aero, but I don't know if it would look as substantial and striking as the heavy weight HH.

Ligher hides are really underrated around here. I certainly prefer them.

@Griff - @Hammer down - @ Seb Lucas . . . .
Aero's midweight horse hide is a great alternative to the heavy fqhh which I love. I went with jerky seal brown mw horse and love to see how the reddish color comes through - the result is an amazing patina. The smell is different to chrome excel horse but also very nice!!
No - I haven't the problem that the pockets pattern come through as you can see. The back view - have to admit - is slightly too blousy so I decided last year to let AERO alter the back armpit to armpit from 27" to 25" - I am excited to get it back next.

Hehe...
But wow, that jacket doesn't look like midweight at all. And yeah there is no problem with the panels coming through.
Wierd.

Look at Aeros picture of the CafeRacer in midweight horse:

Almost looks like the panel from the inside is gonna make a hole in the leather it comes through so hard and sharp :p

looks like 2 completely different hides, this one and yours.

Do you really put stuff regularly in your front chest pockets? I don't. If you are worrying about them imprinting through medium weight horse hide, then simply make them decorative false pockets. Most suit coats have false front pockets for this very reason. It's nothing new. As for the internal pockets underneath, have the jacket maker select extra soft leather, or even goatskin for the inside that won't show. This way, the internal pockets won't imprint through the front of medium HH either. You'll look smashing in your medium weight HH jacket without unsightly bulges on your chest and belly when you wear it. Problem solved.

By the way, Griff, I really like your HWM in this pic. http://www.thefedoralounge.com/show...ng-quot-an-Aero/page3&highlight=slimming+aero
Was it a custom design, as well as the fit? I don't see many with the upper line across the chest. Or perhaps it's an older design that is no longer made as standard?

Yes weird - maybe its because the cafe racer is tight fit and your pectorals presses more and more from the inside - just the result of heavy bench-press ;) My jackets all from the comfort side and the jerky mwhh is very flattering. Good luck!

I guess I'm in the minority. I am not a fan of the mid-weight HH. I never liked how it broke in and mine does show the imprint of the G1 pocket. For me, the mid-weight is softer, but harder to break in. My FQHH was initially much stiffer, but once it broke in a bit, it got much softer and developed much more character than the mid-weight.

BTW, my FQHH also shows the pocket panels- probably more so than the mid-weight.

I have a number of 40s 50s horse hide jackets and I think are all mid weight horsehide. Anyone have a thick aero horse like vintage jacket? Also pony hide used to be a lot more popular back in the day.

Griff,

I only have one medium weight Aero but unfortunately no chest pockets. I don't know if these pics will give you any information. My jacket has map pockets and they don't really show through (IMO).

Perhaps the close-up of the jetted handwarmer pocket can help you decide?

What type of FQHH do you have, HighandDry? What color? I am about to order a HH from Aero and I would like to get a jacket that will become soft, but with character. I am on the fence between medium and FQHH

I have seen HH jackets from Aero that are compared to each other when the type of hide is apples and oranges. A brown HH can soften faster than a fine finish that has more color and is more painted on the hide, for instance.

I wonder if the medium hide you have is a different color/treatment/finish from the FQHH that softened up so well. It could be the finish and color more than the thickness that you have noticed in terms of breaking in well

My FQHH is black and the medium HH is jerky brown.

If I was going to order another Aero, I would order from Wade. It won't cost any extra and Wade will know how to size your jacket.

Ace Rimmer: Yeah that looks really really nice. If one gets a jacket like that then there is no problem.
But looking at the picture I posted (wich is from Aeros page, basically should be the best they have to show what you get)
it feels like there is no guarantee what one will get.

Hammer Down:
The jacket pattern is a standard ZipSleeved Highwayman.
It is located as the very last jacket on the bottom page to the right, just before the various hide options in this link:
http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/products.php?cat=classicleather

I don't know how much of the pattern is custom made, I gave my measurements and asked for a tapered trim fit
and that I would only ever wear a t-shirt underneath. They nailed that perfectly, the straps are in the outmost
position and the jacket fits trim, and gets snug if I try and wear a sweater under.
The length of the jacket and arms are customed to me, and the front is 0.5" longer then the back.
I have mustard soft cotton in body and garbadine in the sleeves, and 2 inner gunpockets lined in corduroy.
Its probably my nicest jacket I have ever had.

Amanda told me that oil pull is in fact a midweight HH. The sample I have is much thinner (and softer) than the FQHH. I agree that the oil pull shows lots of character (judging from the sample).

Yes the old oilpull is meduimweight, but still stiffer then the black or white medium hide.

The new oilpull is thicker and darker and doesnt seem to develop the same patina as quickly.

Im going with the old oilpull in my new jacket.

Dunno about oil-pull being medium. It sure seems to be as heavy/thick as my other Aero FQHH. Maybe a tiny bit thinner, hard to say. It's awesome though, and my 50's HBD is beginning to look good. I just haven't had a lot of time in it since the trip overseas with this warmer than normal weather...
