Wearing a Resistol Westerner that I converted a couple of years back, ('70s vintage?) I converted it to a thin ribbon Strat clone.

Before: it came to me in a crushed up condition and was missing the ribbon and the sweat was toast

Now: New sweat, ribbon, and brim binding. I put the original liner, size tag, and sweat bow back in the hat

The cat in the picture is our neighborhood moocher that comes around to be fed and to sleep on our porch.
I’ve got somewhat large hands, but I don’t know how in the world Terry gets them abnormally huge mitts to do the intricate sew work he accomplishes on his fine conversions. :)

Mandolin necks and fret boards are super narrow having 8 strings run in four pairs with inevitable tight proximity.
I had a friend who professionally and miraculously played the thing with clean finesse and his fingers were like huge sausages with zero taper to the tips!
I guess any obstacle can be overcome if your will power is stronger than perceived limitations.
Also picked with a guy named Barry Abernathy who plays banjo professionally in a top level BG band who has no fingers on his LEFT hand!!! You’d never know it, or believe it until you see and hear him play.
And in related very recent news: Bluegrass lost the great, talented singer/picker; Steve Gully to a cancer he learned about only a month ago.
His genre and fans will miss him sorely.
Matter of fact, Barry Abernathy and Steve used to be in a band together for many years in a well known and liked group called, Mountain Heart.
RIP, Steve!

Sorry I got sidetracked in a reply to your post, Terry, but it just seemed to fall out of my head on this typing pad.

Stetson Stratoliner - Late 40s/Early 50s
Tan/Grey/Green felt
4 1/2 to 3 1/2 rakish crown
3/8 grosgrain ribbon
2 inch raw edge brim
2 inch soft brown sweatband

It was the travel mate of yesterday’s 3X Beaver. This Stratoliner it seems likely at some point had its brim trimmed to 2 inches... but I really like the look it creates. The felt on this hat is fairly thin and lightweight and the color seems to shift dramatically depending on light anywhere from tan to grey to green. As such it is hard to get a good color rendition in the photos. There is no liner in the hat. I’m not sure whether it had one or not. My gut is that it probably did. Consulting with @M Hatman we are thinking late 40s early 50s. It is a light weight grab and go hat that I have been doing just that with a lot lately. Pretty great for a 70ish year old hat.
