^ That deerskin cape is great, thanks for posting. I'm intending to make a poncho for a (female) friend of mine, but I've got more cloth than I need, so assuming I don't screw it up, maybe I'll use the leftover cloth to make something like that, and those photos are really useful/deptictive.

That said, I’d be more inclined to wear one of these Aztec ponchos, some comes with hood. It’s more fashionable in this day and age.
I hear what you're saying. Capes/cloaks are kinda anachronistic today and look strange (due to unfamiliarity), although if your only transportation is walking then they're an effective garment. I think today one would have to wear a cape/cloak that just reaches the knees, otherwise it would look a bit too much like something that walked off a stage if you know what I mean.

reversible leather / wool, tempted by this one. I don’t think I’d wear it if it’s knee length. I prefer poncho style.

Heer field chaplain wearing official army officer's cloak, discontinued at the start of the war. Note the neck strap which secures the cloak on the shoulders when worn "open." I have a repro of this cape and it works great.
