I do enjoy watching college football, and there's nothing more fun than enjoying a big time college game live, HOWEVER, I'm always reminded of a comment by the president of Harvard University, I believe it was Charles Eliot, around 1899 "Football has about as much to do with scholarship as bull fighting has to do with agriculture." Or words to that effect. It's a lot of fun, but the big time game has had SUCH a corrupting influence on American higher education.
Robert Hutchins was of the same mind when he shut down the football program at the University of Chicago in the 1930's. But decades later, before his death, he regretted the act as he came to understand the positive impact athletic teams have on school spirit and camaraderie. A famous Hutchins quote was, "Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until the urge passes."

Hutchins may not have appreciated Football, but his participation in
the Great Books campaign made sufficient amends...

U of Chicago; notes

Chicago 57/L&C 27 :)

U of C is 3-1 :)

LSU is #1, whether ranked or not after USC's too close encounter with WA. ;)

Spitfire: Hawaii #19! 5-0!!!!:)

My Kentucky Wildcats are still undefeated and ranked #8 now. Woo-hoo!

It's so satisfying here in the Heart of Dixie when Kentucky is ranked in the top 10 and neither Alabama nor Auburn are in the Top 25. I've entered some sort of heavenly Twilight Zone! lol

And that is amazing. I didn't think they played football in Kentucky. I thought they only played basketball.

I could not agree more with you! However it is very normal to see the Wildcats way up in the polls in January not in October!

So, wow, one interesting weekend for the top 10, eh? That Auburn/Florida game was a doozy!

I'm just now getting my voice back.:(
The Auburn fans were gracious in victory, though.

Yes, but it's made the FLA/LSU game an afterthought. [huh]
I think LSU would rather have had us beat Auburn.
We've got to really prove something now and could be a problem for LSU.

Go Gators:D
