Conventional wisdom seems to indicate yes on all counts. Tough to tell if he ever did anything to throw a game as player or manager, though. I've never seen anybody accuse him of not trying to win. Every time I've had the occasion see him or speak to him, he's been gracious and cordial. Well, except when I got that first autograph. I was a snot-nose kid and he and the rest of the Reds were playing a charity basketball game. I had the moxie to walk up behind him when he was sitting on the bench during the game and ask for his autograph. He gave me a dirty look, but he signed. OH, and so we don't get too far off track... I wonder if Gus Miller made that hat.
