Very nice. Those Stetsonians are so stately. I'll have to check at home to see if I still have images of the one I had and I'll post it. And I agree, John, that the felt on those Whippets - and I've owned 5 - have all had extraordinary felts. They were all early '50s or earlier, so I imagine the historic time also had something to do with it. The "Canadian made" ones (or whatever they are with the "Whippet" on the sweat) were particularly easy to crease.

And CaramelSmoothie, I am afraid to ask you how many hats you have. I know you are considering a blog to get them all posted, but in my next argument with my wife about too many hats, I want a number I can throw out at her :D

:D Right now, the default answer to that question when asked is "around 300", but I've been using that answer for the past year and a half now! I am going to do an official count when I organize my hats later next month. I expect to be surprised:cool:

for the first time on my ebay "life" someone refused to send me a item (this case a hat) after I asked for a quote on shipping cost outside US and agreed (both) on the postal service to be used.

Asked him several times for a ebay invoice (I might need it for customs house) and now the seller is telling me the item is no longer available nor he send overseas.
:(

Just recently saw another Stetson purchase order with yet another interesting bit of nomenclature.

So, what exactly is "side beaver"?

Is that silverbelly?

And what is "back Nutria"?

True "silverbelly" is the silver-gray fur from the beaver's belly region - selected from the rest of the belly fur (the best felting part). "Side beaver" is probably the sides of the beaver fur - and "back nutria" probably the back of the nutria

hatsRme, I love it. I'll be sure to pass that along. With CaramelSmoothie's 300 (wasn't that a movie?), I should be able to wheedle one or two more at least.

Looking forward to the blog/web site CS.

Thanks Kent!

I missed out on that whippet by 3 bucks! I set my max at 175 and had to step away to teach geography lol

Are you sure that you missed out on the hat by 3 bucks? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the winning bidder could have bidded substantially higher than your final bid but the auction will just show the bid as $3 more than your highest bid. For example, you bid $175, the winning bidder could have bidded $300 but would have won it for $178 because of the $3 incremental bidding as required by the seller.

I'm going through a similar experience albeit it is not happening on Ebay. I bought a 1920s straw cloche in pristine condition from a seller for a paltry 100 bucks. I asked her to send me some more pics of 20s/30s hats that I know she has. She says she has been very busy so I waited about a month and asked her again. She says she is still busy. I am afraid to ask her again because I don't want to irritate her and she refuses to sell me the hats altogether so I decided I am going to wait a few months so that I won't come off as pestering her.
