What I'd really hate to see here is a whole group of well-intentioned, inquisitive, hat people sit around and second guess themselves about their postings, or worse, not post at all, just because someone else doesn't care for the direction that a particular thread has taken. If a posting is not appropriate to the thread, I'll trust the bartenders to sort all that out. We talk about independence, style, and the courage to wear the hats we love regardless of what others may think. Shouldn't that philosophy apply to our postings as well?
Yeah!

I'm only interested in vintage examples, and my collection is an extension of that interest. Talking to former members who were also collectors, many of us have pulled back from posting all the time, or even completely. The reason was that it seems the vintage threads or overlooked, and often ignored while an akubra receives a ton of interest. from a collector view point, we just aren't interested in what color banana republic trilby someone should by.

I've tried to revive old threads multiple times, with no interest from anyone else, and I've all but become exhausted in doing so.

The Great Photobucket Purge didn't help. Some of those older threads aren't as informative and interesting anymore.

Wow, talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy. I can see what some others have been talking about, and why some folks pull out of the vintage hat threads. That elitist crap doesn't go over well with everyone.

But fear not. There will always be new folks to venture into each and every category, forum, and thread here. Segregation lives! haha

Too bad.

I'm trying to get a sense of this discussion - apologies for not reading back far enough or long enough to figure it out. That has never stopped me from taking a stab at a reply.

For Barbara Feldon fans, Bill Gaines once said (I think it was him) everyone knows Mad Magazine's best years were the years when they were reading it. Same way with the Fedora Lounge. The best years are when you are newly arrived, hat in hand, hungry to learn more. Those that arrived before you are the gurus and those that arrive after you had better respect their elders. At some point, for one (or several) of various and sundry reasons, you move on.

The beautiful thing (beside the people, many of whom I consider good friends) is that fifteen or so years since inception there is a wealth of great stuff buried in here. Many photographs are gone, sadly. But most of the fossils unearthed collectively by lounge members over the years remain buried here to be enjoyed. You can trace the development of knowledge over time... follow our most experienced FL minds get smarter from their growing collections and from the research of their fellow loungers thrown into the pot. You monitor the threads that interest you. I remember one prominent Lounge member of his day saying he used to bump old posts just to push the Akubra threads down a little when they rose to the surface (there used to be many more). I follow the Facebook hat communities. I often share links to Lounge threads when the discussion touches on the beginnings of topics that are covered in depth here.

It's hard for anything to remain fresh and stimulating for long periods. I deeply respect those who have been here for a decade or longer, still post regularly and still share comments of encouragement for those who've just found the place.

The best way to pose a question and get an answer is to ask Google, with the words "the Fedora Lounge" in the wording. You'll be amazed at the fossils you'll dig up when you poke around. Try not give in to temptation and leave in a huff. And try not to get thrown out. Somewhere in the middle is the main sequence, where most of our stars shine for a long time.

;^)

from a user with just shy of 6000 photographs posted here... all links still working.

because I state what I like, which is known from the amount of pre-50s prices I've shared to the lounge, I am a self indulged "elitist"? I'm plainly stating the fact

Many threads now are all about recent creations, cheap straws, and other modern items.

I am a collector and love old threads. I've noticed that as time continues old threads are constantly overlooked. I've posted in many to bring them up, with ZERO engagement from anyone else. A few years back. the lounge was a wonderful balance of old and new, and now the scales are heavily tipped to the modern crowd.

I'll just see my "elitist self prophet being" out of here, since it seems you are out to ridicule.

You don't call 'banana republic trilby' ridicule? It sure reads that way.

I love old threads, too. I go back and dig for them frequently. But just like many other folks, I read a lot more than I post.

I'm not a 'great hat,' or 'I agree' type of poster, unless it's a hat that really busts my buttons, and that I'd proudly wear, as some of yours do. Then I'll offer a written compliment. But unlike a very few individuals, I will never denigrate a style or category of hat, regardless of what I think of it.

And there is nothing wrong with new hats. Modern fedoras are an extension of the GE by style. And just like today, hats were made in many levels of quality. No one who prefers any type or age of hat should be looked down upon, afaic.

Part (most?) of what keeps this style alive are new hats. Not everyone wants a dirty, misshapen old thing on their heads (see what I did there?). And not everyone can afford them. Hardly a reason to look down on someone for that.

It's like anything else - go into the forums and threads that interest (the general) you, and ignore the ones that don't. If very few or no one else is interested in what you are interested in, that is not the fault of folks who are interested in something else.

Damn! That was only one person's comment. And I happen to disagree with it, as I am sure several others do. I love your pictures, especially your artistic ones, as I've said before. When I see your hats, I use it as a guide for what I should look for in ebay. And when you sell stuff in the classifieds, I pay special attention to see if it's one of the hats I have envied and coveted before.

I'll fully quote what I said. "From a collector viewpoint. we just aren't interested in what color banana republic trilby someone should buy".

ZERO ridicule, I'm stating a fact from the COLLECTOR viewpoint. If I collect pre-50s examples, why WOULD I be interested in it.

Last I checked, I have tried to help others with picking a modern hat that suits them countless times. I've commented on modern hatter threads giving praise to how well they have turned out.

I enjoy seeing more people pick up the hatter trade. I truly do, and often give a local hatter business to repair some of mine. If nobody picked up the trade, the art would be lost.

Would I rather try to sway someone to go vintage over something from a Walmart shelf, yes. Would I talk down to them about what they enjoy, and what peaks their interest, no.

I guess if your looking for ridicule in that statement, you'll see just that.

I appreciate that. and I do try to share what I find/own so others can see styles, and possibly have one remade. I've often pondered having a custom made like some vintage pieces I've seen on the lounge that I know I'll never come across. if we stop sharing info, everything we've tried to compile will just be lost, and the photobucket removal of images took a huge chunk of information

If it's the trilby straw I wore and posted earlier today, I got that from a shop in Australia. Is Australia now a banana republic?

I am fully aware of your contributions, and enjoy most of them muchly. But okay, that's fair. And if one chooses not to see ridicule in a phrase that has become famous as ridicule, they won't.

I'm a long-time lurker but fairly new member here, and humbly offer my perspective.

I'm mid-50s in age, not a Facebooker nor even a fan of social media in general. I finally joined here because in general, the atmosphere was/is welcoming, friendly, and respectful. I found this site and stayed on to learn more about hats, but was drawn to the atmosphere of hats in use, as tools, as objects of craftsmanship and art, and maybe even more so the association with older things and the older attitudes in general that I strongly identify with. I belong to a few other boards, mostly outdoors and gun boards, and over 10-15 years or more of belonging to those I have less than 100 posts on any of them. In a few months of belonging here, I've made over 50 posts, many of those to share my experiences or answer the few questions that I am able to answer. I don't post in the WHAYWT thread because I have very few different hats and I wear them repeatedly (although y'all have "enabled" me to buy a few recently!), and I'm truly not comfortable with the praise that follows. I have commented on a few that stand out to me, because some feature really does draw my attention, but I'm not one to comment on every hat that looks nice - I don't have time or room to comment on all the nice hats seen here! It's not my nature to draw attention to myself, but I will share when I think something may be of interest or value to others. And I think the folks that post in that thread do so out of the spirit of sharing, not to "brag".

I'm stuck firmly in the "modern" crowd because of my 7-3/4 hat size, but I do enjoy seeing the vintage hats here and learning about them. So, I appreciate both ends of the spectrum, for different reasons. I hope folks at both extreme ends keep posting.

I do take interest in some of the auxiliary threads posted here, but there are others that I have no interest in, and so I just skip them. The fact that I'm not interested in them doesn't reduce their values to others that are interested. I do agree that the loss of many of the pictures on the older threads (like the "How to make a hat ribbon" thread that just re-surfaced) makes them of little value to me, and I'd really like to see that wealth of information restored if at all possible.

Most of all, I appreciate the civil, respectful, positive attitudes that are the norm here, and I hope this bump in the road is short-lived and the dust settles soon.

Y'all take care,
Regan
