I’ve learned to listen to that voice that warns against folding back a sweatband. It’s great to see the tags and get the information, but it’s been the end of more that one sweatband for me. Of course, that meant the damage was already there by not obvious, but still it’s a shame to lose an old sweatband.
I have learned in my hat restoration journey that many sweat bands that look good, feel supple and salvageable at first glance when handled just disintegrate. It is almost like they rot from the inside out....and while the exterior looks and feels good they are incredibly fragile. Likely left untouched one could get some years of use from them but I am thinking eventually they would disintegrate all on their own.

Exactly my observations. Manipulating the leather doesn’t cause the problem it just reveals it. The only solution is to not use the hat or to replace the sweatband. I have some vintage hats that I don’t wear out of fear that perspiring in them will cause the leather to disintegrate. I’ve found chunks of dry rotted leather on my forehead and in my hair in the past. It’s a shame to lose the original sweatband with the markings, but if you want to wear the hat the only real option is to replace the sweatband.

Well, some photos if the Stetson Elkader in XXL

View attachment 430855 When I put it on for the first time, it felt like a circus tent on my head. However, the hat seems to be very large in comparison to the other trilby. Now, wearing the hat feels like sitting in a very comfortable chair. I use the cork stripes.

The brim slighty touches both ears. The center of the crown touches the highest point of my face.

Best regards, Daniel
Looking good. Great start on your hat wearing journey. I will give you a little maintenance advice. I am sure the hat come with some built in weather resistant but as it is a wool hat I would give it a coat of Scotchgard every 3-4 months to keep it from getting wet and shrinking. Not sure if you get it in Germany but I am sure you have an equivalent.

Hey everyone!
I was out thrifting today looking for cool pins to put on the Whoopee cap and found this. Is it a Stratoliner pin or some other random airplane pin?

Thanks!

Other.....Strat pins have TWA on them, are silver, and are "bar" pins (that have a longer bent pin that slides into the ribbon, with no back lock). Also they are DC-3s though there are also proper period Stratoliner bent pins of the period around....not sure who made them....

Here is a origional Strat pin....(DC-3).

I forgot they are hinge pins.....(most hat pins are the "bar" type).

The new ones are the same but have JBS on them.....

Pictures from internet.......to lazy to go photograph mine.

Here is a pict of my modern Premier Strat with a hinge pin of an actual Stratoliner......(note: it is flying the other way from the DC-3), I have two of these, one in silver, one in gold, for my Premier Strats. Cannot remember where I got them, but I belive there is a company that is reproducing these pins.

What are the current etiquette "rules" about wearing or not wearing a hat at funeral services? I know not to wear one in a church or when any ceremonies are being performed graveside, but what about the wake when everyone is just sort of milling about commiserating and telling stories about the deceased? Graveside after the "services" have concluded? Or should the hats stay at home? Sadly, I'm not asking for a friend.

Again Al, my deepest sympathies for your loss.
Probably the hardest question one could answer here on the lounge.

I’d say, follow your heart Al. Do what you think she would say for you to do. That would honor her and i think she would be at peace with that.
I hope you will be as well.
Thank you for allowing us in during such a difficult time.

I am sorry for your loss Al. I think I’d be with Bowen on this. The most recent funeral I attended the gentleman who had passed often commented and asked about my hats. So I chose one I knew he would have appreciated and pulled it off or layed it on a table at times I felt appropriate.

First, thank you both most sincerely. Second, this might be the only time I would wear the hat I'm planning to wear--a purple wool Porkpie. Purple was my wife's favorite color, and her older brother suggested a celebration of her life rather than a dreary, maudlin affair, simply because that would be more her style. So, goofy hat in an odd color; subtle, but for this crowd just "anti-establishment" enough without going completely "off the res".

Al, once again my deepest condolences in the loss of your wife. As for your hat choice, it sounds like you have hit the mark for her celebration. My thoughts are with you.

My belated condolences also, Al. I'm just now learning of your loss, not venturing into many threads here anymore. May happy memories of your yrs together soon replace your sorrow.

My heartfelt condolences, Al. It must be a difficult time.

Sounds like your choice of hat would be perfect to celebrate happy memories of your dear wife.

First off, I think you know best what your wife and family would consider "respectful", but your plans sound to me like a fine way to honor your wife.

Second, just to relay a recent experience - I struggled with whether or not to wear a tasteful black fedora to a graveside funeral service and burial, with plans to remove my hat during the prayers and actual service, but I chickened out at the last moment and went hatless. Being balding and fair skinned, I severely sunburned my head in just over an hour, and dealt with the results for almost three weeks. I doubt the handful of folks that wore ball caps to the service suffered the same fate.

I say wear the hat of your choice in a way that you feel would honor your cherished partner.

So terribly sorry for your loss, Al.
I can only reiterate what others have said about the hat choice. I can’t imagine anyone being upset at your choice.
