Fit Check Thread for Jackets

Makes sense, I feel silly about asking.

To a large extent length comes down to personal preference, so as long as you are happy with the length, that’s all that matters.

To my eye, the back looks perfect. The front is a bit longer then I would choose if it were a custom jacket. But I think the RC also has a big drop, so they probably just copied that.

I was told this is the right place to post this. I would appreciate any comments on the fit of this coat.

I was inspired to purchase this coat after seeing some of the older longer overcoats that men in the mid-century wore.


This is a vintage wool made in US coat I picked up from eBay. I like the look of some of the oversized longer coats from brands like fear of God but I obviously don’t want to spend thousands. This was about $70.

I think a slightly oversized long coat is more versatile than a slim one imo. I think it can look elegant with a chunky fisherman sweater, baseball cap, and some straight fit denim and boots but also look nice over a suit. Others may disagree. Excuse the shoes and pants, this is not how I would wear it. I would wear fuller pants and obviously not Birkenstocks.

How does this long coat fit? Going for a somewhat oversized look. I’ve included a picture Here that has me pulling at the back to show how it would look more taken in which I don’t love but open to hear everyone’s thoughts

Looks massive on you. I get that you're likely wearing pyjamas in the pics, but in the side profile there's too much contrast between your legs and how big the coat is. You could gain 20kg and I think it would still look too big.

Also, while I do agree in the current times this can be a more versatile piece than back then, I wouldn't wear a baseball cap (or any kind of cap) with it.

You might get away with a newsboy cap, echoing that sort of Peaky Blinders style. Depends what you wear under the overcoat of course.

True, I overlooked that kind of cap, or a flat cap (a la The Quiet Man). I was only thinking towards about basically anything New Era would make.

Also, imho that type of black double breasted long coat looks way too formal to wear casually, if I was looking for a long coat with enough versatility to wear with a suit or casual clothes, I’d get something like this.

That’s tough to determine with the information and pics you’ve provided.

Honestly, I think you should post some fit pics with that chunky sweater, denim, boots and with a suit.

It’s the only way you’ll get some trustworthy feedback on how it actually looks on you and if/what could be altered to make it look better.

My thoughts too, thanks for the validation @Pandemic, I needed it.
I’m not used to that length yet but It’s a very versatile piece that I can dress up or down, and wear it with untucked shirts if I want to. And it’s true to the original RC.
I will still be looking for a cropped jacket for my wardrobe, maybe a second-hand highwayman if I find one that ships to Canada.

Hey guys, I got the opportunity to try on a Double Helix - 1930's (Size 40). Lucky I did. I'm normally a 42 but was absolutely swimming in it.

Just wanted TFL's opinion on fit before I pull the trigger. Unfortunately I hadn't tucked my t-shirt in! But it sat at the bottom of my belt line.
At double Helix it is fully customisable. Should I shorten the sleeves a fraction? The Horse hide was stiff but I'm sure it will break in nicely.

The fit is good, I would not shorten the sleeves, it’s getting borderline too short. If I were to nitpick, there is a bit of space in the back, chest area, and at the hem, but it may settle down once it breaks in and drapes better. Maybe tightening the side straps may help, too.

I’d be happy with that fit. Shoulders and chest are on point. I wouldn’t touch the sleeves unless you really like them on the shorter side. The body is a bit roomy but that how many Japanese jackets tends to be cut. You can tighten the side cinches to see what that gives but to my eyes, it looks great as is, including the back.

It’s a very similar jacket to my RMC Steinbeck, which I love. If I find some time today, I’ll post some fit pics for comparison.

This was cotton lining. I’ll be adding in a wool lining so might give me a couple millimetres internal
I’m pretty happy with it. It felt fairly snug trying it on. I would only get a t shirt/ shirt underneath.

Received this Rainbow Country Highwayman in size 40 this week. I am generally a size 38 and this jacket is my most roomiest jacket I have. Is it too big, and should I try look for a trade/repurchase for a 38? I bought this for a relatively great price second hand that I was happy to gamble on.

First three photos are unzipped, last four are zipped. Took photos in worst case scenarios of all the shots I took.
