So new to the forum and in the process of ordering my first custom open Road style hat. I have a few questions I was hoping someone could help me with. Here we go:
1) Western weight vs dress weight: how stiff is the dress weight? Do they hold and retain their shape as well?
2) Would you say the dress weight is comparable to like a Stetson Royal Deluxe felt? I’m trying to find some frame of reference, lol.
3) In your opinion is one more comfortable than the other?
4) Durability: is it the same between the two?
Thanks everyone, getting excited for the process.

So, there are others more expert than me, but I do own both as Stetsons so I'll give my two cents. The dress weight (if you are going custom) is probably similar or slightly lighter than the Royal Deluxe you mention. Work of a good custom hater will hold and maintain is shape just fine. They are both equally comfortable, but the Western weight would be much closer to a "working" hat, whereas dress weight, obviously, is more easily worn formally. They both can be worn either way, of course, but if your doing real "work" or wearing on adventures that will keep it on your head for awhile, the Western weight may be the hat you're looking for. YMMV, but those are my two cents.

I read this essay a few yrs ago & it blew me away:

“All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream.” — Study Out the Land an essay by Thomas King Whipple

This is a conversation you need to have with the person that is making your hat. Felts are created differently, depending on the factory. Felt weight is but one factor. The other critical factor is the degree of stiffening.. Is it rabbit, or beaver or a blend? Your questions cannot be answered with the info you have provided. Go back to the maker you have chosen and discuss it with them.

Thanks, I did reach out and ask more questions. Waiting on a response back. Appreciate the reply!

I'm not sure if this has been asked before. I just noticed that the top of my head lightly touches my hat. I could reduce the center dent slightly to give the top of my head more space. My question is : If the top of my head touches the hat slightly is it ill fitting? Perhaps this makes my head shape more conducive to a open crown style.

Not necessarily. I think it depends on the hat. Many a vintage hat has wear on the inside crown and, especially from the 50's, the dried hair product on the liner to prove it fit that way.

It depends I suppose, but all my hats more or less touch the top of my head. The Open Road I got last month has staining inside the lining at the crown indicating that it was also worn that way for a considerable amount of time.

That said, I guess for optimum temperature control an airspace of a few cm would be ideal, but not would result in a noticeably taller hat.

Yeah that's true . Just wasn't sure if that was from hot air space or actually touching their head. I'm essentially bald at the top.
Cool... that makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who's hat fits that way.

Hello gents!

I've never really worn hats except for the odd times I've worn a cap when going to a football match when very sunny. I've moved to a sunny town recently and I find myself needing a hat so I come here asking for recommendations.

I've bought a bucket hat and a very light cap. The bucket hat is very informal and I would like something lighter or that transpires better. The cap seems good but I hate how it looks so I'll just return it and just flat out don't want a cap. I'm open to hats, preferably that could work informal and formal, but I don't even know where to start, what material would be best for Summer, shape or even brands to look for. I lack vocabulary on hats, both in English and in my mother tongue.

I'm thinking around a 100€ budget for now (wouldn't mind increasing it if I find myself buying a hat and wearing it often). Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
