Overheard you talkin the other day and guess what? I trained at Fort Leonardwood
Back in 1986 at their Army heavy equipment school. A small Air Force detachment trained separately on all the various huge pieces of earth movers. Had a blast there.
Great memories, except Army mess halls suck! :)
Fort Lost In The Woods is what we called it. And the chow halls do suck! But once I got past the first couple weeks of culture shock, then the training was actually fun for me. You just had to embrace the “suck”.

Here’s the civil war hat I done for that Marine friend up in Sota I told y’all about. He finally picked it up from the PO yesterday. He’s been too busy huntin and has taken a 1200 pound moose and 3 white tails.
I’ll include a partial copy and pasted message he sent with the pic. Makes me happy when folks are happy with my work!

“Picked it up yesterday, oh man this hat turned out fantastic, love it thank you thank you!”

A pic of the moose and him wearin the bowler I gave him too:

Can ya see the heavy Irish blood in this guy? Looks just right in this bowler.

Nice work on the civil war hat. That bowler looks perfect on him, too.

My dad as both Navy and Army. I never had a question about which one was for me. There was some “suck” to the Navy, but grub definitely wasn’t part of it!

In all honesty, the chow wasn’t nearly as bad as I make it out to be. The suckiest part of chow was eating in a hurry and listening to the drill sergeants. Sometimes, it was really good and I was always happy to get it.

Yeah by the time you guys got chow you really needed the calories. The most calorie burning the Navy does is making the rack in the morning!

Took a chance on a dusty old Whippet seller had listed as size 7. Lucked out and it turned out to be a 7 1/8 but was quite dirty and the binding was badly stained. Randall cleaned it up and matched this vintage binding ribbon to it. It’s unusuallly thick felt—I think of Whippets as being kind of thin, easily hand-shaped felt—but reacted well to steam. Quite happy with how it turned out—will be a good winter hat, for sure.

Looks fantastic. Interesting what you said about your experience with whippet felt thickness…. My experience has been mostly the opposite And the felt more like this one. Maybe the more handled they get the more they soften up

anyway a great looking hat and Randall did a wonderful job.

Got myself a real genuine Triple R custom re-creation. Very happy with how this turned out. @Randall Renshaw saved this hat from, yet, another year buried deep in a closet. I’ll show this 70’s(?) Stetson western in it’s original state followed by Randall’s work.

I enjoyed building this re-creation for you, buddy! And have enjoyed our new friendship even better! You’re a really good dude except for the Tide thing.

Didja forget to include pics of the inside? Was my favorite part!
