Since we frequently get questions on musty odors with vintage hats, & since it's the time of yr a lot of felt hats get boxed up in favor of straws I thought I would throw this out there.

Take any small cotton drawstring bag & fill it with 2-3 tablespoons of dust free red cedar shavings & throw the bag in the box or case with your hat. By Sept when you're tired of your straw hats your felts will smell nice & be odor free. Keeps insects out of the box too.

You can buy all kinds of cloth bags in bulk pretty cheap. Use only dust free red cedar pet bedding available at hardware & pet stores, not red cedar mulch. Here's what I use:

Plus Red Cedar

And It's fun to empty the bags!

Did any of you wake up one morning and suddenly realize that every custom you ever had made and almost ever vintage that you had ever purchased had a 1 1/2 or 1 5/8 ribbon?

I guess I know my sweet spot!

Or I'm addicted!

Or both!

(I do have an OR and a couple of Strats with thin ribbons, so I guess I'm safe!)
Or you just need to diversify!
I’d suggest to start looking for old No.1s and such with super skinny ribbons then work your way back to 1 1/2-5/8. You should be cured by then but what the heck do i know? Lol

Diversity, that's it! Fortunately all my hats are not the same color, but I do have this tendency toward gray...

The Phoenix that should be ready in...four weeks(?) will have a 2” ribbon. I wanted to go for an older pre-war look.

Gannon is working on my next one. I'm thinking I'll go with an even 1 inch ribbon for a change.

The Dobbs I picked up a few months back has 2 inch ribbon. I like that one a lot too!

I lack several crucial shades.

There are shades of green I would be fine with never seeing again. Changing babies will do that to you. Also, if I think about shopping for green hats, images of Robin Hood flash through my mind.
I have green hats though, and really like the ones I have.

You mean, something like this? The seller said it was a 1/8 inch but I think I got a 3/16 inch! Darn the luck!

I'd like to purchase this specific style of hat. Part porkpie, but with a straight rim (not curved). Pictures at https://countermentors.com/about-us/

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Steve

That is neither a pork pie nor does it have an un-flanged (flat) brim.

Nothing in the current Stetson lineup fits the bill...This Dobbs has similar proportions, but is a wool hat.

A pork pie hat is a stingy brim with a telescope crown that pops back out in the center. From a bird's eye view the top of the hat would look circular...like Heisenberg from Breaking Bad.

What size are you? Are you only interested in a new hat? It’s a simple thing to iron an brim flat and remove any flange, but that would be un-porkpie like.
