Hi,

I have now started wearing hats. The first was a fedora with a 2 inch brim just for dressing up. My seconds is a fedora with a 3 inch brim as protection against rain and sun. Both are from the same company. They sell the first as a mid / winter hat and the second as lightweight summer hat.

BUT both materials have the same thickness and the weight of the first is 123 grams (4.3 oz), of the second 148 grams (5.2 oz).

In this forum I often read one should by a lightweight fur felt for summertime – what does this mean exactly?

Best regards from Germany

That's the concise version of it really. There aren't any rules or guidelines for manufacturers when or when not to use terms like "lightweight", "featherweight", etc. Depends a bit on the hat as well: western hats are heavier than dress hats, so a lightweight western hat can easily be heavier than a normal dress hat. For me a dress hat under 100 grams is a lightweight, otherwise it's just a normal dress weight.
Welcome to the lounge, Thomas.

Robie @Robieman & Rick @humanshoes, hope you both are safe in TN this morning after last nights tornados. Check in when you can.
My wife, the cats, me and my hats have survived unharmed!!! Thank you sir. No damage where I live at all. However part of downtown Nashville was hit hard, with 2 fatalities so far. Also, Mt Juliet & Lebanon, east of Nashville, have lots of damage, (including the neighborhood we used to live in, glad we moved!), with 2 additional fatalities so far in Mt Juliet. More quite a way east of Nashville. Interstate 40 is closed from east of Lebanon, to just east of Nashville, with power lines across the interstate. Hoping they get that fixed before quitting time. It's a long way around from my house to Nashville where I work.

All is well here Jack. Thanks for asking. I got the tornado alert around 5am this morning, briefly debated my safety options, and went back to bed. Foolish to be sure. Such a tragedy for those good folks in Nashville and I hope we won't hear about any more loss of life.

Glad to hear it Rick. I wasn't exactly sure where you would be in the path, but glad to hear you & Robie suffered no damage. I couldn't think of anyone else but if there are other Loungers living in TN maybe they will check in.

PS: Michael Ray but he's up in the NW part of the state.

Thanks for answering Steur
If you are ordering a custom made fedora and you want a lighter version of the dress weight offering....request extra pouncing. Most custom hatters can sand the felt down and provide a lighter weight version of the dress weight. I have not weighed the ones I have but they are a light felt colour and are definitely lighter in weight. I wear them late spring or early summer before the temp turns up to Panama time. Not sure the lighter weight makes much difference as a felt hat is a felt hat and the very few ounce difference is more in the imagination than reality.

Thx a lot for answering belfastboy - yes I think also it is more the Imagination - maybe even the difference between felt and panama as I have been reading in a lot of postings here.

Can anyone tell me anything about this hat? A Dobbs Challenger. Is It fur felt or wool? What’s it worth in good condition? I like the look of it but I suspect that decent second hand hats over here in Japan are overpriced.

Mid- to late 60s Dobbs stingy, desirable size. Yes, it's fur felt. Here in the states, If I got $40 for it on eBay, I'd do a little happy dance.

Thanks for that... I suspected as much. They’re asking three times that amount. Clearly, I’ve got to visit the States. I just don’t know how I’d get all the hats back home. Just fantasy for now...they probably wouldn’t let me in - the coronavirus being here in my district and all!

what do you think these hairs are, rabbit? does this need a brushing? this is a wegener View attachment 217960
All good felts benefit by an occasional brushing. The "hairs" you are seeing are likely rabbit to create that distinct fuzzy finish, and may not necessarily need a brushing... Yet!

My question for you, sir, is your hat size. Which one of the four sizes between 7 and 7-3/8 are you?
