GamaH, I would shape your straw hat like you want it and leave it alone. If the brim flops around and it bothers you I can tell you that I have used felt hat stiffener on one of my natural finish panama hats and it cured that. If you try that I would test it on the underside of the hat to check for any possible discoloration.

I will, thanks. But once the stiffener has been applied, it won't be able to be flipped up anymore will it?

Hello there chaps,

(I have posted this in the boater thread too, apologies for diving in here if it's the wrong place for this...

I was wondering if any of you good Sirs could give me any info on a boater i purchased today. It's made by The York Hat Co. Sadly i can't post a pic as the camera is on the blink. It is actually dark brown and natural woven straw which is interesting, with a navy and cream ribbon. Is two -tone straw common for boaters?

It has no markings on it at all aside from 'The York Hat written on the inside which is in gold with a picture of york cathedral behind the script also in gold. It has a leather sweat band which looks like it has a signature in pencil on a piece of cotton sewn onto the inside of the sweatband. It is in remarkably good condition with only one tiny chip on the brim. I saw a similar one in a vintage store but the logo was in a circle in pale blue and i was told that one was 20's or 30's.

I paid twenty pounds for it, so i hope it was a good buy. Anyhow, Raymond my 30's mannequin head looks rather spiffing in it, so all is not lost!

Any help much appreciated!

Oh if it looks good on your head , or the mannequin really who gives a toss about it's pedigree, but that' s just me!

I wouldn't put any stiffener. Once it's there it can't be removed and steam only seems to activate it once you think it's gone. Part of the allure of a finely woven panama or milan, to me, is feeling the brim wave around with the wind. Light and nice and not stiff like a cracker.

Not sure exactly who's hat was on his head, but there are definitely several hatters that would make one for you. Buckaroo Hatters, Jaxonbilt Hats, The Last Best West, and Knudsen Hats come to mind as having photos of similar hats already showing on their websites. Also, Stetson makes a Buffalo felt hat called the "Sheridan" but I think it only comes in black.

Can a top hat be stretched?

Saw one recently, a tad small, that I believe to be melusine, but looks like someone had uninformedly tried to collapse it at one point, and therefore has multiple creases and bends.

What is the internal structure of a melusine top hat? Cardboard? The shop owner tried to tell me that my local western outfitter would be able to steam it back into great condition, but that also seemed rather misguided. I must confess, however, that I have enough self-doubt in my limited topper experience that I really don't know the answer.

Not likely--a change in sweatband might pick up a little if it is a style that is set off a bit from the body.

Hats resized?

I have a Barbour western style waxed cotten hat and a western style wool Rand hat. Both got totally soaked in a couple of downpours. Both shrunk a bit, making them too tight to wear comfortably. They weren't expensive ~ $60.00 and $100.00, but are too ice to toss. Can they be "stretched" to a larger size?

Yes, wet them again and work with them with a hat stretcher. Let them dry while on the stretcher.

I doubt that a waxed cotton can be stretched.
For the wool one it's risky, too: wool felt isn't so tough as beaver or rabbit felt.
