I've got a couple 60s Stetson and I love em, so even if it isnt from the 40s, if you dig it, wear it.

The plastic liner covers were sometimes removed as the hair creams back in The day would cause them to turn yellow and crumble off. Black sweatband are common on 60s hats, though I have seen early examples with black which is not the case in yours.

What also screams out 60s or newer is the blocking of the hat. The profile is wrong for a 40s Hat.

Here is my 40s Stetson. Notice the difference in how the blocking is between mine and yours. Older hats were more straight crowned, minimal taper (reverse taper at times as well)

There is no size tag or price tag unfortunately under the sweatband anywhere.
Also there is remnants of gold or silver around the letters of Royal Stetson when held up to the light

Crown needs a good blocking and the brim may need re-flanging...with that and a good brushing have fun......make the hat yours and wear with pride! You will learn a lot and end up with a great hat!!

1 and 3 are in like new mint condition! As to where 2 is not so much. we know that uncle bill, (born in 1912) had a delicious taste in fashion as it is shown here. My girlfriend and I Know nothing much about this taste in fashion other than it was high dollar and made the mob look really appealing.
Uncle bill has long since past but his appeal to fashion still lives on.......
Please forgive us if we sit in the wrong forum but we are absolutely intrigued with curiosity as to how old they really are? Are they really a high end collection? Mabe a Possible value set to this beautiful collection?
I keep telling her one of these belonged to capone can somebody PLEASE varify my shenanigans? lol

unfortunately Al Capone had been deceased for probably decades before any of these were made

... and I am not sure what you mean by "high end collection" but these are not something of great value nor are they very old

if they mean a lot to you being from a family member then there is your value ... but monetarily they are unfortunately not worth very much at all

Hello all,

New here, and pretty new to hats in general. Have a few Fedoras, but not sure if any of them truly fit right. That's a question for another day

Recently purchased a cheaper Panama off eBay. Measured my head as they suggested, came up with a hair over 25" (using a non-stretchy string; didnt have a tape), so I ordered a 64 based off of that.

Hat arrived Friday, and seems loose to me. When first placed on, there's no tension at all. If I pull it down to close to my ears, there gets to be a very small amount of tension, but not a lot. Now, I can bend over and it doesn't fall off when pulled down. However, if I quickly turn my head side-to-side, I can feel it move slightly on my head.

Thoughts? Not positive how a Panama is SUPPOSED to fit. Know being straw, they don't stretch so shouldn't be too tight. Going to the beach next week though, would like to know ASAP if I should exchange for a 62 maybe...

Know they can be "shimmed", but figured being brand new, now would be the time to swap if ever.

I'm guessing maybe your measurement was off a bit. It's true that straw hats in general aren't an exact fit like a custom lid from a local hatter, but they should still fit your head. Not super tight, but not loose either. Try again with the measuring. Have someone help you so the string stays in place right where you want to have the hat sit on your head.

64cm is a pretty big hat size. Unless you're a real big guy my best guess is you need to try the measuring again... do it a couple - three more times and see what you come up with.

Hats can be "shimmed" but if the hat is too large you get waves in your sweatband which can leas to red marks on your forehead where the shims set...

Think I figured out the problem, and you're correct. Measurement was right, but when I transferred to the tape measure, I had it at the 2" mark and forgot to subtract. So now, after several different measurements (all with string), I'm getting 23.4-23.5

SO, I'm thinking two sizes smaller at a 60? Sound about right?

If it's a cloth sweat after frequent wearings it will loosen up. If it's roomy now I would certainly exchange it. Leather sweats can have a tendency to snug up a bit so if its leather and yer comfortable wearing it now keep it.

If it's 2 sizes to big leather sure as heck wont tighten up that much.

Sounds like a 60 to me at your measurement of 23.4" - 23.5". When you exchange, just tell them you need it to be a true 60cm. Panama hats can run a little tight, or a little loose. I tried on two L's at a small mall shop in Guayaquil recently... one was too tight and the other was just right.

I bought my first Panama hat in 2012. It's marked size 63, but that is completely wrong as I wear a 60, too... well, 59.5cm, but most places don't get that detailed in the sizing.
