Theoretically how many times can you brush your hat before you wear the felt thin?
After every brush or lint roll a noticeable amt of color does come out which upon closer inspection it is small hairs of fur.

Is it like your cheap sweaters where you eventually use the lint ball shaver once too much, and you end up w sweater cloth that is almost see-through when held up to light.

I suppose it depends on the hat. Are you brushing a wool felt hat? That would account for more residue.

I've had hats for years that I brush occasionally with a purpose-made horsehair hat brush, and I get so little residue on the brush that I can't see it unless I have my magnifying glass handy. ;)

When I brush, I do it lightly, and not very often, as in monthly or so (?)

I brush all of my hats every 2 or 3 months ... I never notice more than a little bit of dust coming off some of them

the only way a proper hat brush should affect your hat is making it look better

are you brushing it in the proper direction ?

if not you can lift the nap and disrupt the fibers of the hat

I'm looking to buy a couple hat brushed for my felts but know nothing. I see that there are several makers offering several varieties such as 100 % wool and horse hair. Can anyone recommend an type and vender based on your satisfactory experience? Thanks much. Willy.

I've got a couple natura bristle paint brushes that I use. I ea. for light and dark colors. I think I picked them up at Lowes for around $7. I was in a recently opened Cavenders here yesterday and the hat specific brushes (curved ones) for $9. Used one on the black hat I was wearing and it did no better or worse than what I use. They had the brushes that resemble the old whitewash paint brushes for $13.

I was given a couple of horsehair brushes from Carolyn Busch of Fino Fino in Menlo Park CA a few years ago (now closed). One of the brushes is labeled M & F Western Products. I went to the M & F web site and they are a distributor of western products including hats. They have a feature for a dealer locator that includes Amazon

I really enjoy the contour of a curved hat brush ... it really allows you to put some nice pressure on a brim and get right into the break of a hat with the shape of the brush hugging the crown ...

brushing a hat is sort of an art to a hat geek like me ... it is therapeutic

I just brushed about 50 of my hats last night ... I love to throw on some tunes and give them a nice brushing ... especially the ones who don't get much wear

I feel it is important to do around season change

I also think it is important to have a blonde brush for light colored hats and a dark brush for dark hats
