There was a thread recently re-activated where they talked of microscopy and fur felt identification. You would need known exemplars to compare the felts to. I’ll go through my garage tonight and see if my scanning electron microscope is still there or if we got rid of it during the last garage sale. ;)
While you're at it, don't forget to look for a beaver, a rabbit, a buffalo, a sheep, and a moose. Y'know, for comparison purposes. :D

Okay, this has me scratching my head , I went to my favorite local hat maker to have a custom western weight hat done. He says 1yr wait time. All of his pure beaver hats run approx. $850. I'm okay with the price, his work is amazing. But I could be dead in a year, who knows, plus I lack that kind of patience, so I say I will think about it. A few weeks later I buy this nice off brand pure beaver cowboy hat on ebay for $70. The felt is in great shape, perfect charcoal color, so I pull off the old ribbon, liner, and sweat. I go back to the hatter and ask for the hat to be refurbished. Cleaned, reblocked, new everything, and creased just like the $850 hat I wanted. Cost, $80 bucks and will have the hat in a few weeks. ???? Hmmm, seems I'll be getting a custom hat for under $200 with a fraction of the wait time. Is there any downside to this logic? Will post more when the hat is done. :)

Sounds like a huge win with no downside to me. Is the felt of equal quality? Pure beaver western hats are rare and usually go for a lot more than that used.

Hey, Ken, have you looked at Optimo's Westerns? They are reaaallly nice, cost 750, are pure beaver, and are ready in about 6 weeks.

Hello, Gents!

I'm seeking help identifying the following hat from the movie The Gathering Storm (2002). I think it's a homburg but it looks like it has a narrower brim than a typical homburg.

Any idea where I could find one just like it (but in black)?

Any chance of a high resolution photo(s)? I can’t even tell if the brim is bound.

It’s been my experience that the narrower brimmed homburgs are quite common. The wider brimmed versions that I prefer are harder to find. Do you have some measurements of what you’re looking for?

For a Stetson Ermine in 7 1/4...
I'd be willing to lie and say they waited to make the felt 'til the Ermines died of old age.

Ermine are only weasels, and as such are vicious, bloodthirsty little ba$tard$, as anyone who has ever tried to raise poultry or game birds will tell you. So don’t feel bad about artificially shortening their life span; in fact, I highly recommend it! Especially if the end result is a hat. ;)

Be fair warned, though, none of this is likely to change the ladies’ opinion of them!

Indeed they make awesome hats / fedoras, hands down quality lids. Seems funny though that a Chicago company makes a "western" cowboy hat, their interpretation just doesn't capture the true spirit of a western hat, they look more city slicker to me.... I'm waiting on a black version of this western hat right now from my local hatter.

If I wore a hat made from a super cute and cuddly otter my wife would never speak to me again let alone sleep with me.

My wife's late Grandfather would happily supply the pelts for felting if he was still around. Anyone that has the combination of otters and a stocked pond would probably chip in. He never met an otter he didn't shoot.
