On the Akubra logo, have you tried contacting them direct? Perhaps they have them available?
If I may, a totally unrelated question: I've seen reference to reeded and unreeded sweatbands in hats (a date reference was made in an eBay ad, stating a hat was before or after a certain year due to the fact the sweatband was either reeded or not). What are they referring to?

Look at your sweatband on the edge closest to the brim. If there is a ridge all the way around, that is the "reed".

I've been wondering...are there any styles of hats that are indicative/native to the East/Southeast?
There are hats immediately identifiable as western...are there such hats for the East? I've heard of the plantation hat....but that's about it.

I know this must be answered some where but I could no find it. How do you read a vintage Stetson size tag. 7/8 what size is that etc.?

Depends.... Could be a 7 7/8 but most likely a 6 7/8. You don't see many vintage 7 7/8.

Do Akubra lids vary in size and fit? I own a Fed IV Deluxe in size 59 and it fits me perfectly. (I fit a US Size 7 3/8.)
I just got my Moonstone Fed IV (not the deluxe) yesterday in size 59 and it is really loose on my noggin'. So loose I will have to put in those little foam things for sizing.
Anyone else notice this with their Akubras?

Yep. A couple of my Akubras were pretty loose when I got them and 7 3/8 sized hats almost always fit me perfectly. The ones that were loose have shrunk and now fit me perfectly.
If you can't seem to get it to fit I know someone who will take it off of your hands

Cool. Maybe mine will shrink too? I am going to try the awesome JtL Teardrop Workshop thread/method on my new hat, so perhaps all that steam and shaping will help the fit.

I think Imperial grade Akubras are sized a little more generously because they will conform to your head more than the Heritage. JMHO

I've seen examples of people using steam to shape their hats as well as distilled tap water from spray bottle. Is one better than the other, or is each separate method reserved for a specific type of product or bash?

With steam you have to work more quickly and more locally but the hat is ready for wearing sooner. With water, you can work a larger area over a longer period of time but it takes longer for the hat to be wearable and keep its shape. There is also no danger of overheating the hat.
With that said, I prefer water.

Oh, OK thank you very much for that answer. So, that said, does it matter what kind of water? Bottled, right out of the tap, filtered, etc? We definitely have some deposits in our tap.

If you have any doubts about your water, use distilled. Especially on lighter hats. Dark ones generally show discoloration way less.
On darker hats, Ive used tap, but here tap isnt too bad, mineral-wise. Bottled water works, too. But distilled is probably best.
Also, invest in a dedicated spray bottle. I bought a bunch of big squeeze trigger bottles at Home Depot. My hat bottle says DISTILLED WATER on it in big upper case letters.

I thought water contracted the fibres ( over time ) and the use of steam - expand them. ( great advice for getting my akubra in the new year...can't wait! )

I am curious about the vintage of the range of vintage hats acquired from E Bay, second-hand stores, attics, and so on as seen on TFL. The decade of origin is the best way to address it, in my view. I wonder if the survey-adept folks on TFL might get one going about people's estimates of the distribution of decades of old hats seen to be bought on TFL? This is my own opinion, based on what I've seen.
Before 1920: less than 1% (neglible)
1920-30: 5%
1930-40: 15%
1940-50: 30%
1950-60: 30%
1960-70: 20%
I realize that E Bay has many more recent-vintage hats, but they are not being shown here, and so I have no interest. Is this an interesting survey?
