Is anyone familiar with this "S.S. Quality" branding on a Dobbs hat and when this would have been used?
These two may know

Apparently the “What is going on with this site? thread has been removed from the Hats section.

,Does this forum now have a crawling AI censor looking for patterns of letters & words like YouTube & other parts of the internet do? I have noticed on a couple of posts of another OP that some letters had been removed from words & replaced with stars or something. I really didn’t give it much attention thinking the OP was being funny. Now it has happened to some of my posts. I used the word “****er” as in peanut ****er, ****erscotch, candy, etc. In my posts the first four letters of the word ****er have been removed & replaced with stars. Now my word appears like this ****er. Did a bartender do that? And by my post count I have about six posts that have been deleted. I have only figured out what two of the posts were, neither of which broke any rules that I know about. Seriously? What is this forum coming to?

PS: one question has been answered as this post was censored as it posted.

I've noticed this in other posts as well. I also thought it weird. I guess this is one explanation.

It seems like old late 90s 2000’s BBS code where they enter a list of banned words and you end up with unintended results like above. Far from AI… more like basic basic.

Oddly though I am seeing it pop up on some and not for others. Here for example I see Timmy’s post just fine. But when Jeff quoted it, it showed as censored. HJ’s posts came through as censored For me… but Brad’s did not.

All the above had been censored in the beginning. Some had been quoted before the OP censorship was corrected by bartender Nathan. The quoted doesnt change. Not sure why my OP didn’t change. I’m sure we will never get an answer.

Question: as some have seen I’m currently wearing a borsalino fedora, a really nice hat overall, but I can’t help feeling a little overdressed and was thinking perhaps a Stetson Whippet might be a good alternative.

For reference I’m thinking daily wear generally, I tend to dress fairly casually, perhaps a cotton shirt and sweater/jacket and plain chino type trousers. I also play folk music and a little bluegrass but really want to avoid the cowboy look, that’s just not me.

IMHO, a Whippet is on the more formal side. Something about the wide ribbon and binding. To me, a more casual hat would be an OR or Stratoliner.

Modern furfelt Stratoliners are readily available and decent. I always found the shaping and short crowns of the modern Whippets somewhat lacking.

the older Whippets with a taller crowns and more squared blocking are some of my favorites

Yes, the stratoliner is a pretty decent looking hat. I’d also be tempted to try the open road with an open crown and bash it myself, the cattlemen crease on the factory ones isn’t my thing.

On the other hand, the temple seems a good classic hat and slightly more subdued than the whippets
