Yeah, and there are guides out there. In this forum, "substantial" probably means 2.5 in or more. "Stingy" would be 2" or less. Most around here go for a width between 2 3/8" and 3". Except Joao, he's not happy unless it's over 3". After you get a few, or try some on at a good hat store, you'll get a feel for what looks good on you. I like the larger ones, too, but some of my favorite hats are between 2 1/4" and 2 1/2" brim width. YMMV.

It does look like it's riding a little high on your head, so it might be a little too small. But it could also be the angle of the photo. I think the style would look fine on you if it the fit was right.
If you put the hat on straight, how many fingers can you put between the hat and the tips of your ears? Two is usually a good indicator that the size right, but not everybody wears their lid the same way.
At any rate, a good way to start.

Yeah, you know, that might be it. The height might be OK if the brim was wider, or the crown was straighter. I hope that helps rather than confuses.

Remember, you are wearing the hat for you, and if you like the crown a bit higher than some others might, then that is your choice. The crown style, crease and dents are all a very personal thing. What looks good on one might not look great on everyone. Proportions of hats throughout the decades have changed just as much as any other fashion element, so I don't really believe that there is just one style that's correct, one brim to crown ratio, etc.

I need to try a load on... I'm not sure I could get away with a wider brim and a don't really like it when hats are too close to the eyes.. Not on me anyway. I would like a less tapered top. I'm liking the look so far anyway. You guys reckon there is a fedora for everyone then?

As moehawk said above, fashions change and at one time people would have worn really high crowns and wide brims yet a decade or two later those same people would have worn shorter crowns and smaller brims. It's down to the individual and I think the individuals style comes across in all their attire.
I couldn't imagine Joao in a small brimmed trilby for example - it just isn't his style. I've got a small brimmed homburg that doesn't get much wear because it feels to me like it's too small a hat (though my wife likes it on me).
So, in short, wear it, feel good about it and enjoy it!

I'm not the kind of guy who likes things to be perfect. In fact perfection tends to bore me. I like my guitars beat up, my home is full of rustic furniture and from what I've learnt so far, I like hats that have character too. I'm sure My mind may change as I delve more.
One thing I've noticed is the impact my hair has on the overall look. When I try and hide it a bit by tucking it in, the hat takes on a different look. It may be that I need a different "lid" (love that expression by the way!) for when my hair is shorter.. Can't believe I didn't realise the joy in hats earlier on in my life!!!

When I got my first hat, a Panama, I was the same way. I liked to wear it back away from my brow, even though the lady who fitted me tried to get me to wear it "right." Over time, however, I've taken to wearing them more "traditionally," with a little tilt.
I can't find a shop anywhere near me that stocks lots of different styles for me to try. Very frustrating. It may be a case of trial and error and ordering them online. Rather expensive way of doing it. Unless anyone on here can reccomend a shop near Birmingham in England....?
