Thanks Hat, my missus said that would have a go at doing that and if it doesn't work, or the hat is damaged, she will arrange for Santa to bring me a new one. Result!
If it's natural straw you should have no problem. Paper straw can do strange things, like get lines that look like a run in women's stockings. It seems there will be a random fiber that absorbs moisture much different than most.
That wavy brim looks worth the risk though. Just go easy on the steam. And do it in separate steps, allowing it to cool and dry between them.

We’ll need photos of the liner, the sweatband markings, and any labels behind the leather sweatband. Detailed high resolution photos are very helpful.

The binding looks too narrow to be a Whippet. The Stetson Whippet is the most misidentified vintage hat out there. Whippets are decent hats, but their popularity/price is not in proportion to their quality.

It's just very difficult to identify a hat from a photo. It could be a Stetson, a custom, or anything.

. I am having a hat restored and it had a raw edge but I decided to have a ribbon bound edge put on it. I told them to keep the dark brown crown ribbon and try to match the hat with the brim ribbon. Is this a bad decision. I went that direction because all my other bound hats have matching crown and brim ribbons. My major concern is what if the brim ribbon is not a perfect match for my hat color. Would it be strange to have contrasting crown ribbon and brim ribbon? Any advice appreciated!
