Is this possible ?

Are the blank hats ( open crowns ) that will be made into teardrop styles different ?

Long story short, I want the oval style gambler I own to have pointed front like the "Stalker" hat from Red Dead Redemption 2 ...

I just received the hat and it's brand new from Stratton.

Right now it's hard as a rock and there's a plastic insert I'm not too happy about inside
the hat...

Hey friend. Allow me to put my two cents in here since I just got done with my stalker hat. First off, I got lucky. I found a vintage Thoroughbred hat that was close, and in my size, on eBay. Bought it, and reshaped it over a tea kettle. Finally have it dialed in. I would say start there and try and see if you can get the shape you are looking for. The thing that you will struggle with the most on the stalker is the pencil rolled brim. That’s 90% of the reason why I bought the hat that I did. It was already there.
The other option is to go to Mike from
North West Hats and have him custom make one for you. It’s like 450 dollars for a full beaver custom hat. Unbelievably reasonable, and I believe he gets his blanks from Stratton. Technically I think Winchester, but my understanding (anyone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, Winchester gets theirs from Stratton). Mike is incredibly nice, a real craftsman, and he’ll be able to make you the hat. Just give him a lot of specifics. You are basically looking for a 4 1/4 tall tear drop crown, with no pinch, and a 3 1/2 inch pencil roll brim. That’s as near as I’ve been able to figure it. O’Farrell has a similar hat called the tecate that would also fit the Bill if you want to pay 1000 dollars for pure beaver and wait a year.
Here’s the next thing. My advice is not to go for a completely flat brim. Hence why I recommend at least looking at the Tecate for reference. There is definitely a difference between a video game and reality. I got my Thoroubred, the brim was flat, and BOY did it look Puritan, prospectory, and Amish. Was just really awful.
Here are some pics of mine now that I have it dialed it in shape wise. I still need to clean it and replace the band, but I’m very happy.

Premier hats are sold open crown in Royal Deluxe quality. Your link is for the Royal version, which is one felt grade lower.

There are lots of people who own the lower quality Royal and love it. It depends on what you’re after and how spoiled you’ve been with truly great felt. The Royal De Luxe is a good hat and for me it’s definitely worth the relatively small price increase.

Stratton owns Winchester, but Winchester is who makes the felt hat bodies. Stratton gets their hat bodies from Winchester. The right hatter can do great things with Winchester’s felt.

When there are no markings to identify the felt used and the hat feels very nice how can we tell what it is? I suppose if you got the hat really wet and it lost its shape you could assume it was wool felt but I'd really like a better way. Some hats are obvious, but I have a few Dobbs that feel very nice but don't say fur felt anywhere on them. I have a Dobbs Golden Coach that does say fur felt. Interesting that they said that. However more often than not the opposite is true. There are FTC rules when it comes to percentage of wool content. So on a wool hat you will likely see a WPL label. Fur as far as I know does not have such regs. On newer hats though for marketing purposes makers do like to put Fur Felt and the like. Vintage hats however do not do that as often.. exceptions were like 3X beaver… 100% Coney.. ect. Now within that hat makers rarely exposed the percentages of various furs used in their formula beaver rabbit hare ect.

All of that said…. Wool hats in general you can usually tell by feel. A bit rougher texture and usually visually thicker but less dense felt. (There are exceptions to this as well with some very vintage wools)

Are you referring to modern hats or vintage? Very few true vintage fur felt hats are marked as being fur. Most current production hats I own that are fur felt aren’t marked.

The Wool Products Labeling Act of 1939 defines wool and requires that it’s content is disclosed. However, those labels could have been removed or it could be on the disposable packaging. If your talking new made in the US or new imported for sale into the US then if it’s wool, or has any wool content, it is required to be labeled as such. There isn’t a similar requirement for fur content.

I can easily tell wool or wool blend hats in most felt just from the feel, and often from photos. There have been a few that have stumped me. A couple hats have me going back and forth as they have properties that I associate exclusively with wool and properties that I associate exclusively with fur. I had a vintage western made by Miller (not Bros.) that had me going back and forth. I ended up giving that hat away. I recently received another hat that has my head spinning as it is definitely wool one second and then definitely fur the next. Maybe a blend?

Once you have handled a goodly number of fur felt hats it become easy (easier) to pick out the wool hats. They just have a certain look that in most cases (certainly for modern hats) are readily apparent. When out with my wife and we cross paths with a person wearing a hat and my wife will ask..."what do you think of that hat?". My inner hat snob emerges and I usually reply..."Don't like it, cheap wool hat!" There is just a look that is evident even from a bit of a distance.

I see there's an Etiquette thread. Many references to it. Have you visited? It starts out with a long series of posts about a movie scene. Nothing etiquette. So, sorry, fail.

I see Emily Post's answer to this question. It leaves out a doozy. What about in a bar? Nightclub? Apparently "lunch counter" is fair game.

I do to a jazz club. I see a fair number in hats. I take mine off coz wider brim or heavier winter hat. But I'm angling for a short brim hat that won't be in the way of indoor style.

I note that the ppl are indoors. Nobody is outside. Wearing a cool hat outside is pointless. It's winter, put that trapper hat on out there and batten down the flaps. But once inside? That's where we see and be seen.

...I was just watching a dance scene from a movie and the guys all have big hats on. So there's that.

I feel this pretty much sums it up. However you feel comfortable.

You will find there are folks (mostly online) who can be very staunch in what they deem to be the proper etiquette. In practice the rules of hat etiquette change with culture and time. We seem to be in a time and place as far as hat wearing where most people make up their own rules and what feels appropriate for themselves. And that’s just fine by me.

Agreed, Joe. Churches, weddings and funerals seem to be the last venues where hat etiquette is sometimes scrutinized here in the U.S. Otherwise, wear your hats and be proud of it...indoors, outdoors, daylight or dark!

Oh, there are a few "know it all" websites out there who list the same "new" rules as if they're set in stone, but they've mostly repeated the old rules while leaving out the ones that were ridiculous even 100 or more years ago like "remove your hat while you're being introduced to someone you've never met before." They're also apparently no longer concerned about offending the dead, because I saw no mention whatsoever that we should remove our hats and caps when a funeral procession passes us by. I personally like the way the U.S. Military in all forms have kept it simple--hats are covers designed to protect the wearer from weather; if you're indoors you don't need that, so take 'em off and put 'em back on when you go outside. Simple and reasonable.

Part of why I am firmly in the camp of “my hat… my rules”…. Which then transposes to “my rules…. For my hat” Which means I am in no position to impose hat rules on anyone else nor are they on me. That however does not mean I wear my hat with entirely no respect. There are times I remove mine in respect or deference to others…. Situation… or location. But I do so in what feels right to me.

Thank you most sincerely for correcting me Brent! I've never been in the military myself, and the few members of my family who were didn't speak of their experiences with me while they were still alive, so I was basically going off of what I was told by others. Still, pretty easy to remember. Outdoors? Wear your hat. Indoors? Wear your hat some of the time.

I have a fedora that says both Stetson and Cervo. I have uploaded images for you to review.
I have a big head so I bought a size 8 and it's too big so might flip it.

Quick anecdote about hat etiquette: as you do in Barcelona, my friend and I went to La Sagrada Familia this summer. They have airport-like security with metal detectors and xray for bags. On the way in, on the wall there was a pictograph sign of a hat coming off a head. I pretty much expected this both for security purposes and, you know, it's a church. So I was walking around holding my hat but some folks didn't know, or care, and put their hats back on inside. Although I'm always the one arguing hat etiquette is dead, even I know that a church that's been consecrated by the Pope is a hats-off-indoors situation.
