    Panama Hat Trail in Mexico

I just got back from 12 wonderful days in and around the city of Merida in the Yucatan peninsula. They make their own version of the Panama hat here. It is made out of a palm leaf and they can be quite nice, like a fine Quenca. They certainly don't the fine weave of a Montecristi, although...

    Mexican Panamas from the Yucatan

I'm heading to Merida in a few months and that's near where they make the Mexican version of the Panama hat. Does anyone know how good these are? I know they are hand made and made from palm leaves, but I can't imagine they are anywhere near as fine as Ecuador Panama hats...KC

First Panama Day of the Year!

Today it's a gorgeous 70 degrees in the SF Bay Area. I donned my Panama for the first time since October. It sure felt good!...KC

    A Tilley Goes To Angkor

I just spent two weeks in Bali and Cambodia (at the Angkor Archeological Park) and this time, instead of taking a Panama, I took my new Tilley Air-Flo. Let me just say that I am TOTALLY sold on the Tilley. It was the perfect lid for the hot climate there. It was a great sunblock, kept the...

Good night nurse, I bought a Tilley!

The unthinkable has happened. I finally broke down and bought a Tilley. I travel a lot, much of the time to hot, steamy places like Hawaii, Bali and southern Mexico. Next month we're going to Angkor in Cambodia. For most of these travels I have worn a Panama. Last June, I wore my...

    Cleaning a Panama

Just got back from a trip to the Oaxacan coast in Mexico. Got my Panama a little dirty...on the pinch and from sweat near the ribbon. Is there an easy way to clean this off? Can I just use a light soap and detergent? Thanks, Craig

    US Wings Sale and Sizing

As some of you may know, US Wings is having a fantastic sale with all sorts of fine leather jackets on sale for $79.95... http://www.uswings.com/factory2nds.asp I ordered a vintage cowhide A-2 in a large. I normally wear a 40 to a 42 and was assured by US Wings I should order the large, but...

    New Grey Fed...what you think?

Received my grey Fed from Akubra today. What a nice lid. Great felt and it shaped easily. Bashed it into an Indy style...I tried to do a teardrop, but had a hard time with the crown. Please let me know what you think... I want to thank Atomic Glee for his thread a couple of weeks...

    Stetson Hat Book

I recently got a great book, "Stetson Hats and the John B. Stetson Company", by Jeffrey B. Snyder. Great info and fantastic pictures of some of our favorite lids. Now here was the big suprise for me: all of this time I thought Stetson was a Texas company. I mean, what is more cowboy than a...

    Johnny's fedora in Newsweek

In the Newsweek that just arrived today there's an article on Johnny Depp. On page 46 there is a picture of him wearing what looks very much like an Adventurebilt, but with a thinner ribbon than the Indy version. He looks pretty darned good in it, too...KC

When did the fedora first appear?

We all know the fedora was the hat of choice from the 20s through the 50s, but when did it first appear? I was watching "The Great Quake" on the National Geographic Channel tonight, about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and there was an original movie of a man with a fedora. So we know it...

    In Praise of Montecristis

Well, it's that time of year again. Time to hang up the fur felt and put on the Panama. Daylight savings time brings longer and warmer days and is usually when I start wearing my Panama. This year is a little different, as those of us in Northern California have had record rains and it isn't...

    Ukulele Ike

Anybody here a fan of the great Cliff Edwards, aka Ukulele Ike? I'm a ukulele player myself and discovered Ukulele Ike when I first picked up this little four stringed beauty. Ukulele Ike was one of the most popular recording artists in the 20s and 30s, although he was best known as the voice...

    Open Road...Seabiscuit Bash

I recently got a 1950s era Open Road, never worn, from Ebay. It had the typical LBJ bash that I didn't like. I tried bashing it myself, and put the rather dismal results here on Fedora Lounge. But then I sent it to Art Fawcett and had him bash it for me in the style of the hat worn by Jeff...

    Stetson's Numbers

I've seen the Stetson Open Roads with no number, the number twenty five and the number one hundred (spelled out). I'm guessing this pertains to the quality of the hat, maybe the amount of beaver in the felt. Am I right?...KC

My first bash...Stetson Open Road to Bogey

Well, I tried and I think I may have come sort of close. I recently got an old Stetson Open Road (I'm sure it's pretty old, because the box it came in was the round kind with the leather strap around it. I don't think they've been making those for awhile) and didn't really want the Open Road...

    Chase Bogey Fedora by Fedora

I recently won a really nice Chase open crown fedora (probably 40s) on Ebay, with really soft felt. I sent it to Fedora to be made into a Bogey (like the one in my avatar) and here are the results... KC

    Dating a Stetson?

Is there a way to approximately date a Stetson by the label on the inside of the crown? One I'm looking at has what looks like a beaver and an eagle with Stetson below that and 'Twenty Five' below that. Is this an old one or a new one? Thanks, KC
