100% speculative, but I'm thinking fabric wax. I used Otter Wax on a canvas jacket once and it kinda looks like that as you begin to apply it.

I don't really get this kind of distressing though. Like, what is it supposed to be? An old, dirty hat (for lack of a better term) doesn't look anything that. I get the desire for the lived in look, but this ain't it.

E.g. Here's one that's been both naturally and artificially distressed:

A well worn western:

I am willing to experiment, but one must know where to start to begin :)
I think the best way to 'discover' methods of distressing a hat is to have fun, experiment, trying different ways of creating the distressed look. To me that would be the fun part of it rather than copying someone else's experiments. Dare to ruin a few felts and see what you discover. If it is a distressing look you are attempting to create then nothing really can go wrong.

I've got two questions that are probably pretty quick.
1) lacking hat boxes or space for them, how do you store your hats? Felt and straw
2) I would like to change out the hatbands on my new PHD Cuerca Havana from PHD. I have a thin leather but would like to swap it out with some cloth ones or pugs. Any good videos you would suggest?

Several threads on this. This seems to be a pretty active one: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/where-do-you-hang-your-hat.8659/

This should get you started on pugs and hatbands: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/hat-adornments-ribbons-bows-pins-pugs-leather-etc.62249/

There are more, but these seem to be the biggies. Pugs are easy; they just wrap around and fasten to themselves with little clips.
That's what I was seeing. I was looking at the offerings from Village Hat Shop. I like some of the colors. I don't know about the quality but if it works it works.

I have done it....painfully...... and I have come to the conclusion that I am better off biting the bullet and taking off the ribbon.......less painful in the long run.

I took off the ribbon, I can see your point. I'll upload a few files.

Here is the cheesy sweatband, about to come out:

jlee, I can see your point about the poly thread:

I left the ribbon attached at the end point:

Basting stitch is in:

And here's Scott's new sweatband, newly sewn in. I looks krinkled in this picture, but it's actually okay, light was fading, I was in a hurry:

I purchased an awl, but I did not use it, instead I used one of these. Occasionally a pair of pliers was needed to pull the needle through, but it all worked out. Thanks again everyone!
